I am about to graduate from a 6 week truck driving class at seward county community college. A great program. Now begins the search for a good company that hires fresh out of school. I got defensive driver training as well as cpr/first aid and osha forklift training. Not looking to get into the mega(treat drivers like a number or doggie poo) would prefer something smaller. Have tanker endorsement but I heard tanker is not a good way to start. Looking for helpful advice, not criticizm. Thanks.

Tanker IS a good way to start. There's 6 good tanker companies that actually recruit from CDL schools. If you like any of these companies, submit online application before any phone calls. They all recruit new CDL grads even if the website has different; much depends on the terminals.

Great info most definitely, but am looking more for something terminaled in my area rather than having to travel a thousand miles(figuratively speaking) to interview or pick up a truck. Thanks though!

In SW Kansas, you're going to have to figure on doing some traveling initially to orientation and "training terminals", no way around it. There are a few outfits in Enid OK (tanker and flatbed) who may or may not take new drivers, not sure.

How far are you from Great Bend? If you're 23 Van Wyk will take a look at you out of school

Most companies, you will have to attend an orientation somewhere. Tanker companies I listed, will want you to attend their tanker school which usually lasts a week. Other than that, just dress nice and make some visits to companies in your area.

Groendyke has a terminal in Liberal. I know a guy that works there and is very happy. I don't know if they hire without experience, but it might be worth a drive down there to find out.

True but they i am pretty sure they require hazmat which i have no interest in getting at this point. Maybe down the road but not ready for that yet.

Why aren't you interested in getting the Hazmat endorsement? It's no big deal to get and it opens you up to a lot of better paying jobs.
