You could set Preferences/Route/Freeway - avoid Freeways.

    Thanks,

On my automobile Tom Tom in preferences you can select "via". But with the 520 I see you can not so how I work around that is split the route into two. The first half of the route choose a point on the street you want to travel. Then after you are on that street go ahead and pick your destination. It seems to work for me.

I put in that route and tapped "Compare Routes." It showed the 301 route as the alternate without having to change any other settings. It says the 301 way has a toll on it. I'm not saying that the second route suggestion will always be the alternate one you wanted, but in this case I think it would have done it. If not, then you would have to enter a waypoint about halfway up 301 and it would have also.

You can always put in a route, then on the map screen tap on it. Move the screen around to the point you wish to add as a via and then at the bottom tap on "add as via". Be sure to zoom in so you are on the right side of the road for your direction of travel.

    Or

While in a route, add a location and on the Begin Route page tap on Add as Via.

    Thanks,
    Mark

So I bought a new TND 720 with lifetime maps and have owned it for a couple of weeks. I was home a few days ago and my brother hooked it to his laptop and did the update using the dock download. So o get back on the road and I have a paperweight. It will not boot up. I push the reset button on the back and it starts to boot but then the screen goes blank after it is maybe 1/4 of the way into loading. I charged the thing using the plug in because I read where it needed to be fully charged and still no joy. So I plugged it into my inverter which essentially provides an a/c charge and still no joy. Now I am away from access to a computer but let me guess, I am going to have to hook it up to a computer again?

I'm gonna guess yes. Sounds like a bad update, possible corrupt file maybe.

My idiot brother should have done a function check after he updated it. I guess I will have to buy me a new laptop so I can hook this thing up. Oh well, more new stuff for me

I am a local driver here in Chicago. So I ran into some speed limits that were incorrect so I clicked on the speed limit icon and entered the correct number. Now I believe when I dock that info will be sent to head quarters.

My new question is: Can this method be used to enter other info besides speed limits? I am guessing that when the icon is clicked that the 520 takes a snapshot of the location. Can I type in Left curve is incorrect should be Right curve and RM will know the curve at that location needs correcting? In the last 3 weeks that i have owned this I have found many curves that were reversed. It says left when in fact I'm going right.

Next question with hundreds of low clearances in Chicago where is that data stored? Is it visible to anyone? I think it should be displayed on the screen as I approach the viaduct. If there is no way to see the heights how are we to send in corrections.

An observation i had today. I have my setting for 13' height. It would NOT route me under a 13' viaduct. As I approached it, it kept turning me away. (2444 W 35th St, Chicago, IL 60632) But I know I will fit so I went under it and when I got exactly in the center the vertical height warning screen popped up. First time I saw that and a little to late if you ask me. Well to be fair it told me to turn left but I went straight through and it didn't have time to recalculate but either way it wasn't going to send me under it.

    Thanks

Well when you get it working again, be sure for EVERY SINGLE route you use with this TND 720 you compares routes so you can see a map of the route because if you dont plan on wasting thousands of dollars in fuel and copious amounts of time.

But youll get to see the country, and every back road and long route known to mankind.

I was in Ogalalla, NE and wanted to go to Carthage, MO I havent been east of CO in awhile so when it said 750 miles I didnt think anything of it, when I told my wife she googled Carthage and said its only a little over 350 miles?

I backed out did the compare route and see the RM (POS) is taking me to carthage via St Louis?

WOW, route 2 took me right down 29 to carthage saved me 300 plus miles. Why it came up as a secondary I do not know but it happens all the time now.

I have screen shots when I care enough to post them I will. its ust a pain they are on my phone and I dont have email set up on itl

Or I also like the "Turn right, then make a U turn ASAP" WTF? Why not make a left turn instead?

You can report the curve or speed changes but that only works in theory, I reported such things like the road I am on right now, one way its 100% backwards but going the other way its right. I dont get it.

but I reported it over a year ago also with the speed changes, nothing. Now Idaho just raised their speed to 70 for trucks, I bet it takes a year to make it to the TND.
