That musta been somethin' to see! Many moons ago I ran team twice a week from FL to Toronto in a 70 somethin' KW COE with a single bunk (pre air ride cab days), no a/c, 13sp and 44000lb hendrickson spring beam suspension, spoke wheels all the way around, a V12 detroit and no power steering... It was a Canadien setup of some kind to haul trains. It would really pull as it beat you gently half to death. Ralph and me named it the Screamin' Demon. That was a hee - man truck to drive. I can't imagine trying to drive that thing or put fuel in it today!

Maybe trucks like that one r why now I'm tired all the time :biggrin_25518:

Can you buy a Detroit engine by itself like you can in the marine industry or do you have to buy a tractor/engine combo? I ask as with all the EPA shi&, it might be worth it to buy a T660 and put in a Detroit thats good on fuel.

    EPA rules would forbid it

you cant get the 660 in a glider that i know of, and by the rules you cant put in a non-08 cert'ed motor in a 08 or newer

    Bronc,

I am asking in theoretical terms; Could buy a T660 with a ISX, sell the ISX, and replace it with a brand new DD15?

If you want a t600 with a Detroit, you buy a used 1, they are out there, just like there are COEs out there. With the computer engines, you would have a big job getting the right wiring to interface with everything that is different from 1 engine to the next. I don't think it could be done for a reasonable amount, and then, if you did do it, you would have to be very creative in getting it maintained, other than doing PMs. Used with an original Detroit, you can do anything you want as long as you don't exceed the capabilities of the drive line.

It's probably not feasible for a working truck to switch engine brands.

The Spruce Goose was flown just 1 time.

the DD15 seems to be as problematic as the rest of the new motors
looked at one detriot had on display out in Vegas and was not impressed to much junk hung on it just to much to go wrong
There are T600 out there with S60s in them now just have to look

I will wait on how good or bad they are, no way to tell by looking, all the new motors have stuff on them.

The DD15 is the first production engine to draw mechanical power from the turbo (turbo compounding), and also is designed to run hotter, several ways that is more efficient, including less fan on time needed. If it works, the fuel economy should be better than anything else out there, even rivaling the old engines by Detroit, Cummins, Cat, Volvo, and Mack. The new MaxxForce engine from International is also interesting.
