I've never had one, but I think it's a sun visor.

Windshield visors were originally for reducing glare on flat windshields. On newer trucks with large curved windshields they just act as a fixed sunvisor.

I think mainly for "looks". Those more interested in fuel economy omit them it seems. Otherwise I see no real benefit as far as vision improvement on the typical fleet truck with large, curved windshields.

On new trucks it is a vital part of the aerodynamics if equipped.
