Yeah prob the cap on the expansion tank bleeding off pressure from bad head gasket, dropped liner ect....

Basically pressure in the cooling system

Run with the cap loose and see if it goes away.

UPDATE---- TRUCK IS FIXED---The problem was a failed Fuel Gear Pump. It took them 3.5 days (18 hours labor). Earlier in the week they replaced the oil pump because they thought that was what was causing the noise. At that time I told them I couldn't go much longer, I was concerned about the bill. They ask me to leave the truck with them because Cummins needed to know what was wrong with the truck. They said they would work with me on the bill and apologized about replacing the oil pump. In the end they gave me a discount on the parts and only charged me half of the labor. The bill was $2230. When I saw the bill I almost felt like I had won the lottery; I had expected at least $3000. I recommend Crosspoint Cummins of Fort Wayne, IN they are a great bunch of guys.

Before I read this, I was going to say it sounded like the fuel pump... my truck made the same type of noise you explained. I had my fuel pump replaced,, $5400.
I walk past trucks now, and hear that noise, and I'm like, oh no! Fuel pump needed soon! Good thing they took care of you. I bet if you heard that sound from another truck, you'll know what it is!

NEW UPDATE---Howling sound is still gone but.....truck made it about 1800 miles, lost oil pressure, and shut down. Had to tow it into Albuquerque Cummins. I expect it is the new oil pump that was just put on. So I am back in the shop again, under a load, and shop is saying they can't get to me til tomorrow afternoon.

Some of those pumps had press on gears that would spin free on shaft after some use, ck. if shop used a rebuilt or new oil pump, hope its a easy fix like a broken wire!

I've cross my fingers I'm wrong
Your old pump was with ceramic plungers( by the truck age) If plungers were cracked and mechanic didn't check it (i'm sure he didn't) abrasive ceramic particles in oil system will kill engine in about what you said distance.
    Hopefully I'm wrong.

They have it fixed form 2014 I believe. Before 2014 they were playing forth and back with changing parts and design. I'm surprised with such a low price for pump replacement. As I know from people across all states the price is $ 4000 - 3500 just for the pump. Plus labor it going to 4800 - 4000.
But who knows probably we still have some good people here.

From what I was told by the techs, they replaced the gears in the pump. They were to shim the gears with color coded shims. The block is marked for blue shims and they used red shims and apparently did not check the lash of the gears. The gears ate each other out and metal shavings worked through the motor and ruined it.

    Oh noooooo.
Really sad. I was in your shoes exactly year ago in Houston. Shop denied to pay any money to help replace engine after their overhaul and engine was completely destroyed by monkey with wrenches.
