I shined on it, and shined it on, until I got a registered letter I had to sign for. So I went for the preliminary selection.
The D.A. comes out, and says let me tell you a little bit about the case, " The bodies were found...…………"
At that point my brain basically shut off. And he went on, and closed with "...………..we expect a 4 to 6 month trial."
I'm thinking wow, I'm gonna lose everything not working for 6 months, this is like 25 years ago.
So then they said if you need to work, they can't ruin your life because of jury duty, so out of 200 people there, at least half got dismissed.
It did make me wonder though, who sits on the jury of these big cases? No regular people, that's for sure. Regular Mo just doesn't have time. -
The only way I would sit on the jury of a big case. There would have to be an opportunity for a big bribe.

In the state I live, they use tax records, Driver license and Voter registration to pull names from.
Swiss Mountain Dog Thanks this. -
How can you pass up that $6 a day you get for jury duty? You should be jumping at the chance to serve.
Jazz1 Thanks this. -
That in a nutshell is the problem with the US legal system. Notice I said legal system and not justice system.
We only have a legal system, true justice rarely prevails.
Part of the problem is that we end up trusting our fate to 12 people who are not smart enough to get out of jury duty.
Another part is that if someone is accused of anything from the smallest traffic infraction to major felonies they have to fight a system that is stacked against them.
Everyone who is out to get the accused is paid to be there, all of there expenses are covered,
If the court system had to pay the accused for all of their time and expenses every time a case was won or dismissed, we would see a lot less of false and BS charges brought up.Jazz1 Thanks this. -
I served on a jury earlier this year whilst still at my old job. It was actually a bit of fun since the case was for a big money medical malpractice lawsuit (the defense won). During the jury selection process there was probably 60 people in the court room being called up, and interviewed. During that time they asked if serving on the jury would put an undue hardship on you personally as in losing money for being off work. Anyone who had that problem was let off the hook for duty. Some other people replied with a letter stating it they had jobs out of town, and such.
Essentially it’s pretty easy to get off jury duty unless you live in a town of 20.
Also, everyone who served on the jury did so willingly. They don’t threaten you with jail time if you really do not want to be part of the process. I advise you to give it a shot. Like I said I really enjoyed the 6 days I spent doing it. -
This is actually the best thing you can say. Basically, if you reference jury nullification they want nothing to do with you.

I went when called in my county here in New York. Went in, filled out a questionaire, 40 bucks in 15 minutes. They said they called too many and everyone who showed would be exempt from duty for 7 years.

The last time I served, I was sent a letter to appear at the court which is a big craphole court building, then having to deal with crappy parking - $20 a day - checking in then standing in line for the first check point, then having people with crappy attitudes who tell you no cell phones, no leaving the line and no food or drinks allowed and getting through the two check points, i went to a hall with about 300 people who were sent the same letter for the same case, which was a simple assault. Sat there all day, no food other than a vending machine (diabetic which by lunch I am feeling like crap) then called in, questions for five minutes, told to wait outside the court room for another two hours then being told that the case has been called off because the guy plead guilty. Then getting to my car, having to wait for the lot attendant to appear and move a couple cars because he has me parked in the back lot blocked in by the valet cars he has been sticking in the lot, I can't move until then and he comes back from 'lunch' after two hours which you finally leave at seven pm, it is dark, rush hour is still on because it is snowing heavely which means I won't get home until 11.
Yeah I am willing to serve on a jury but hell it isn't easy.
