Sounds like a useful tool to have

I have the impression that internal SWR meters often work well UNTIL somebody opens up the back to "improve" things in there. The modifications can have an effect on the meter and its ability to gauge signals.
I don't have a dog in this fight because my radios are tiny compact models that don't have internal SWR meters. So, I monitor things with external meters installed upstream on the coax. -
Radio — meter — amp?
-
Testing, it's radio - meter - antenna.
Then talking, it's radio - amp - meter - antenna.
The amp usually adds maybe 0.2 SWR points, to about 1:1.3 or so.Slowmover1 Thanks this. -
I'd say this is true 99.9% of the time.
Even the college-educated and ex-military textbook technicians when they try to make improvements and they think they've made an improvement, due to their bench not being configured properly the performance is always worse.Meteorgray Thanks this. -
They all gotta start somewhere and learn from there..

Yep, but not on my radio.
