Having been local for 25 of my 26 years, it’ll be easy enough for me to fall back into the pattern, and the hourly pay will make the possibility of sitting in traffic easier to bear. Paid to sit in traffic? Okay. Paid by the mile and sitting in traffic? I’ll pass, thanks!
Each one of us has different needs, different aspects of this life that we enjoy and thrive under. As I said, I have a new appreciation for you folks that can live in the truck and thrive. In a way, I’m a little jealous that you’re able to do it. I enjoyed pounding out mile after mile, enjoying the scenery as it passed by. And lo and behold, away from the I-5 corridor, people actually use their radios to communicate! Being a chatterbox by nature, I was grateful for that. As far as the pressure of traffic volume and getting to my destination, I never really sweated that before, in fact I used to thrive on the pressure. While I may not necessarily thrive on it anymore, I certainly don’t let it bother me. I’ll get there when I get there. What I’m looking forward to is being in my own bed at night, and if I’m sick, I’m where family and friends can get to me and help me if needed. Being sick in the road is a very lonely place. And when I get sick, I’ve always tended to go down hard.
Time to move on...

I can’t speak for Portland, but out of the Tacoma WA area, I think they start at $20.50/hr, and go up based on experience. I was told I would start at $25.50, but since I have heavy haul experience I’ll get an extra dollar an hour, so $26.50.

I think I saw you cruise by me recently in Spokane. I’m with you man. I’ve never been OTR but I was doing 2800-3000 miles a week as a local driver. Home everyday but when your doing 600 miles a day are you really “home?” I sure wasn’t. I’m not cut out for the road. Maybe if I didn’t have to come home and be dad and husband. Maybe it would be easier if my “home” was behind the drivers seat. I dunno. I’ve lost 35 pounds since October getting off of the long stuff. First time under 200 lbs in 8 years.
I’m happy for you. You took a step back and chose your health over your ego. I wish I could be a trucker. I’m just a guy that goes to work to do a job delivering fuel and operating a truck is part of it. Some are just destined to be local guys. Nothing wrong with that. Good thing about being local is your skills are always sharpening. The wanderlust lifestyle will always be there and the talent you acquire from being a local driver will carry over well into that. Good luck over there, I’m sick of this snow in Eastern Washington. My company needs drivers in Seattle and Portland. Maybe we’ll cross paths. -
Possible we may have passed, although cruising by you could have only been possible going downhill...
