I'm just wondering how easy it is to get wi-fi connectivity out on the road. I'm contemplating whether or not to buy a lap-top with wi-fi ability.

Wifi is growing in popularity but you can also get mobil internet service and be online all the time. It's like getting a cell phone plan for your laptop. Millenicom is a good service. I've never not been able to connect and it's unlimited for $60 a month. The wifi's at the truck stops will charge $5 or more a pop anyway.
I wouldn't know what to do without it. Well, I guess I'd have to open that atlas after all.
nwcountry, dockrat and mizdageeragn Thank this. -
The WiFi at truckstops can be as little as $12 a month with yearly plans . If you have AT&T DSL at home you can get free Wifi at many businesses including McDonald's and Starbucks .
-
That seems a bit expensive for internet service.
-
Especially since they are all limited to 5gb worth of bandwidth pr month. The trade off is that you aren't tied to a particular brand of truck stop or truckstop isp. You can park at a walmart or rest area or shipper/receiver and have internet at your fingertips. If you an O/O, with the ability to self dispatch, this can be quite valuable and worth the expense
-
Also, the wifi at truckstops is way more often than not very slow. I call it hi-speed false advertising.
-
That's not expensive at all. It's just like internet at home, but ANYWHERE and for about the same price as a good home connection.
The service I mentioned is truly unlimited. I use it for videoconferencing with the kids, youtube, uploading my vids, and of course weaning on the truckers report.
Truth told I'd pay twice that. -
I pay $20/month for high speed at home. I guess if I'm making enough money it will seem worth it but for this pauper $60/month is a lot of $$$. Does that $60 include your cell phone service? -
60 bucks or get so pissed you smash your screen out when the first truck in the lot drives by... i swear im not talkin from experancce
-
Nope... just internet. $20 a month sounds like dial-up prices, but you gotta be on promotion or something if it's true high-speed (or dsl-lite or similar). I paid $30 for 6 months on a bundle at home but it jumped up to $50.
It's only worth it if you're going to use it for all it's worth. I get all my directions from it, I can zoom in from satellite or street view to see my surroundings, roads, driveways etc, find NTTS, alt phone numbers for shippers/receivers and see the layout of the place oftentimes.
but like I said before the videoconferencing alone is worth it. Plus that $60 is actually what you pay, not an advertised $30 where you're paying $44 after taxes and fees when all is said and done.
