Ever heard the term "shiftless skunk" ? Totally unrelated. I was just curious.

I think that was a running joke on the Lil Abner comic strip. Lockheed's Skunk Works were named after a place named the same thing in the strip. Although some people say that they called it that because they made plastics there before they started building the SR-71 there. That plastics story sounds bogus.
Sadie Hawkins Day is famous and from that strip. Lots and lots of well known references from that strip are still current. Tons of stuff from Wall Street and Shipping/Navy is used in everyday life now but not noticed by a lot of folks.

 

I remember the comic. I never really got into that kinda thing tho...
