Turbo chirping

I have a 99 Cummins N14 Celect Plus. I’m not sure what it came out of but it’s in an 01 Freightliner Century now. I recently had the exhaust manifold gasket that goes into the back side of the turbo replaced. It made the truck run quieter but now I can hear a chirping sound that sounds like it’s coming from the passenger side of the motor. It’s almost like a belt chirping but I only hear it when I’m in the high side of the gears and about half throttle or more. I’m a new OO and this is my first truck just looking for a little advice if anyone can help thank you.

 

I am not a certified mechanic, but my experience with engines is that when you hear chirping, it's usually friction of some kind, usually metal on metal. You may need a turbo build.

 

I appreciate it that’s what I was thinking but hoping I was wrong.

 

Check your air to air clamps & boots first before you go to putting a turbo on.

 

Exhaust leak. My 3406A made chirping noises because the first 2 cylinders had no studs in them.

 

Wait...Wait...Waitttt.

If you’re hearing chirping/squeeking under acceleration/boost it could be a head bolt.

After a while, when one breaks, the head gasket will errode.
Old Cummins were known for this.

N-14 Celect, I’m assuming it’s a 460

 

Good news, it’s 3 separate heads, not one.

 

In the late 80’s most trucks were cabovers. If you heard a bird chirping in the bunk you most likely had a broken head bolt as this was fairly common back then. Yes it really did sound like a bird in the bunk.

 

I had an extra long drill bit and extractor. If caught early enough the bolt could be replaced with the head on and the gasket would be OK.
