Exp. Driver out of the truck too Long???

I am in the same boat, been out of truck to long. Only thing I can tell you is do the same thing I am doing. Trying to find a smaller company and doing a lot of hoping. All the larger companies want recent OTR. There have been ads in my paper for a couple of the larger companies and they will not even talk to me cause I have not driven OTR in about 3 1/2 years now. Can you reapply to your last company? Other than that keep pounding the pavement and worst case you might have to take a refresher or even go to a company like Swift that would put you with a mentor for a month as long as you can pass a road test.

That was my back up plan go to my former employer where I was treated like family and well I went there in May and they parked all there trucks in April. They closed the doors and put For Sale signs on all the trucks. They had been in buisness since the 50's and with this economy they called it quits.

 

by a "few" I'm assuming 3 or more. yeh, most companies won't touch you. there are too many experienced (recent experience) drivers out of work right now for them to choose from. trucking companies are ruled by their insurance. their insurance simply won't allow them to hire someone that has been away too long. your best bet if you want to get back into driving and not work for slave wages would be to find an O/O looking for a driver/team driver.

 

I have a stupid question. How does the insurance company know you have not been driving? Further more why will an insurance company insure a newbee with no expirence but will not insure someone who drove for ten years but chose a different path for a while.

I drove a total of 10 years local and OTR. Six of those years were OTR. My MVR has nothing on it. I can not see how it is cheaper for the insurance companies to insure newbees who will make mistakes for sure while they are learning. I drive a truck every weekend hauling our race cars to the races. I still know how to drive a truck but will not even be concidered. A student is more desirable then me. I just dont get it.

Problem is companies only count the last 5 years. You have to have 6 mos in the last 3. Otherwise you are a rookie, go back to go and don't collect $200.

 

there's really no point in trying to figure out the rationale of an insurance company. or maybe you could call them and ask them to change their rules. good luck with that.
