So heres my issue. I have been working as a carpenter for the last few years and I got laid off a little while ago. Carpenter work is going to be slow for god knows how long, so I figured lets go driving again. Wrong. I guess I can't get a job because I've been out of the truck too long. I have a prefect MVR, no accidents, and left my last company on good terms. Most places I call say I'd have to be a student again. WHAT. Give me a break. I know I'm better than that, and I cant afford to either.
Now that I vented, I am wondering what I can do, or what I need to do? Being a student just won't cut it, I've got a mortgage to pay.
Any info or thoughts would be great. Thanks MIKE

I am in the same boat, been out of truck to long. Only thing I can tell you is do the same thing I am doing. Trying to find a smaller company and doing a lot of hoping. All the larger companies want recent OTR. There have been ads in my paper for a couple of the larger companies and they will not even talk to me cause I have not driven OTR in about 3 1/2 years now. Good Luck.

Can you reapply to your last company? Other than that keep pounding the pavement and worst case you might have to take a refresher or even go to a company like Swift that would put you with a mentor for a month as long as you can pass a road test.
GOOD LUCK! -
That was my back up plan go to my former employer where I was treated like family and well I went there in May and they parked all there trucks in April. They closed the doors and put For Sale signs on all the trucks. They had been in buisness since the 50's and with this economy they called it quits.

by a "few" I'm assuming 3 or more. yeh, most companies won't touch you. there are too many experienced (recent experience) drivers out of work right now for them to choose from. trucking companies are ruled by their insurance. their insurance simply won't allow them to hire someone that has been away too long. your best bet if you want to get back into driving and not work for slave wages would be to find an O/O looking for a driver/team driver.

I have a stupid question. How does the insurance company know you have not been driving? Further more why will an insurance company insure a newbee with no expirence but will not insure someone who drove for ten years but chose a different path for a while.
I drove a total of 10 years local and OTR. Six of those years were OTR. My MVR has nothing on it. I can not see how it is cheaper for the insurance companies to insure newbees who will make mistakes for sure while they are learning. I drive a truck every weekend hauling our race cars to the races. I still know how to drive a truck but will not even be concidered. A student is more desirable then me. I just dont get it. -
Where in IL ?

Problem is companies only count the last 5 years. You have to have 6 mos in the last 3. Otherwise you are a rookie, go back to go and don't collect $200.

there's really no point in trying to figure out the rationale of an insurance company. or maybe you could call them and ask them to change their rules. good luck with that.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. And yes it has been about 4 years since I was OTR, but come on, and student would be a more at risk driver in my book, not my call. I figured it was an insurance thing, not too much you can do about that. And yes I did contact my last two companys(last one I was there three years) and they all said I would have to start from scatch again. I think I'll start checking out locals and tiny road companys to get some time behind the wheel, then reapply where I want to work later. I am in the Chicago area so local should pan out somewhere, I dont want local but I'll do it to stay alive ya know.
