Hello, first post here. Been doing lots of research on getting a tri axle dump for Asphalt/gravel/sand hauling. For engine type I have read a lot of reviews on here. The biggest issue seem to be not letting the engine idol a lot because of the emissions crap. How do you Asphalt guys deal with the idol time when waiting to dump or while dumping? Or is it not that big of a issue? Thanks for any info. I’m leaning towards Cummins or DD. It will be newer 2014-2016 model truck. Thanks again for any input.

Idle 50% of my day. In town Vegas mostly. Occasionally out of state work/drives
Just open it up on occasion to let her breath. Has never had to manually regen yet. EGT will get hot and burn out on her own during stand by at jobsites.

We pretty much idle all day with several rare exceptions. On really BIG jobs the dump becomes a tanker with 300 gallons of fuel for backhoe, paver, bobcat etc. Otherwise it's driven enough so that it does not suffer much.

This is for a 1980's era Superliner 500. No emissions anything in sight. Its been retired for over 5 years now sitting quietly in the barn.

    Can't just shut it off?

If you're just running a straight truck, why not spec a smaller displacement engine? The smaller engine is going to have to work harder and build more heat.
