Hello all. I am in my third week of trucking school. Just finished our 4th day of driving.

The first day, we mainly did pre-trip's and barely moving it around the lot. Second day we worked on skills and such, continued working on shifting. Third day we went out on the highway and each drove. Today, we did some city driving, intersections and such. Not too much traffic.

It has been a battle for me at every step. Today, I am left so pissed off at myself it is unreal. Stupid mistakes, grinding gears, etc. I was having trouble with intersections. It's like I can't get my ####### mind to focus on the few different things. Slowing down, waiting for the truck to bog down, down shifting into 6th, making sure im turning right. Its like I go into panic mode immediately. I get focused on getting into the right gear, and start turning like Im driving an Escort. One intersection I had to actually stop on green because when I was trying to downshift into 6th to make the turn, I lost the gear and had to stop to get it into 4th to take off again and make the turn. Almost took a stop sign out making a right turn because I started turning because my mind was so focused in panic mode to not hit the car turning left from the direction I was turning to, and to be slow enough and get it into 6th.

It was a fiasco, to the point I was so enraged with myself and the situation that I forgot where the hell 5th was when I had it back in the yard and the pressure was off.

Lost all my confidence in 20 minutes.

Am I just not cut out? Anyone make these stupid mistakes? I feel so dumb, like I just can't get it. Im so pissed at myself.

Just remember, none of us were perfect when we started. Take a deep breath, and RELAX!! The driving part ain't as hard as it looks.

There are three very important aspects to turning, among the many other important aspects of a turn. Slowing down enough to make the turn and doing it in a way that someone doesn't run up your ###, Getting the truck into the right gear to make the turn, without searching for gears, and turning far enough out that your trailer stays in your lane and not in a curb or someones car.

Its like my mind picks what it thinks is the most important, and I focus on getting it into gear so Im not searching for a gears or going it in neutral. My mind focuses on it so much that its like the turn and the speed become a secondary concern. Not cool.

I don't know how to shut it off and go with the flow.

I feel stupid making stupid mistakes.

Your description described me so closely it was scary! Are you sure you wasn't in the truck with me at school? Relax! I just finished up school last week. I promise you, myself and probable most students go through this period of second guessing. I found myself lost in the middle of a intersection once or twice.:biggrin_25524: It will get better. The first hurdle for me was learning to relax. Once that was over with all the pieces started to fall into place. Give it time it will get better.

You're on what, day 4? Dude, if you were driving perfect on day 4, you'd be downright scary! Seriously, relax. We have all been where you are now. It's a big-assed vehicle. It's gonna take time to figure out how to drive it. Even after you graduate school, you're not gonna know everything. I don't know everything about driving, and I've been doing it for two years. Drivers who have been doing this for ten years don't know everything about driving. But after a while, the basics (turning, shifting, braking, etc.) WILL become second nature. Just ease your way into it, and remember, you are at school to learn a new skill. Relax, pay attention, and LEARN. Deep breaths.

You just have to relax and pretend you are by yourself..I was very self concious when i went through the school.I had miltary tractor trailer expirience, but everything is automatic lol!I thought if I could drive in Iraq,I could drive anywhere..Not true..Shifting will come...The biggest thing is just doing it..You are human, you will get better!I didnt have a "regular" trucking job before I went to Iraq to do recovery,so I was bigtime worried about it..I thought I was gonna mess up and they were gonna send me home.Well that company has mainly european volvo and mercedes trucks..They both have synchronized transmissions! So they shift like cars..The only trucks that have regular transmissions are some of recovery's international aatac and century wreckers..So i caught a huge break lol..Kinda long story..The moral is,you never know what opportunity you might get,but dont ever count yourself out early in the game..

I had the same problem myself. Relax and slow down. Take your turns in smaller steps. Slow down sooner, that will give you more time to get in your turning gear, then start setting yourself up for the actual turn itself. Take the turn slow and easy and it will all come together. As you get better and things start coming to you more naturally you will pick up the pace. As others have said, you are in school learning to drive, you will make mistakes. Just do your best. Good Luck!

Double clutching is going to be weird to me. I never did it in 8 years of trucking.

I didn't know anyone that did it in the real world. I was usually clutchless up or down, 18 wheeler, or 4 wheeler!
