I was with Landstar for about 6 months, I went into it as an experiment because I wanted to see what it was like. There was only one problem I had with them and that was that their trailer fleet is too small. A few times it took as much as a week to get an empty. Other than that I had no problem with them I made money while I was there and was running primarily off the load board. My issues where 1) with my truck, I had leased an old truck to try this with and I had problems keeping it on the road and 2) while I liked choosing where I went, it was an extra job I just didn't want to be doing. Who really wants to cruise a load board for 3 hours after driving 11 hours? But that's what you're going to have to do til you make your bones there. Ultimately the reason Im not there is because I realized that in order to do well there Id have to get a solid newer or new truck and I just didn't want to live in it for the 3-5 years it would have taken to pay it off.

Over all Landstar is a good place if you dont mind doing the job of a truck driver + load planner + accountant. If you aren't up to it though or like to make bad decisions, or like to blow your entire check because it's there, then you're not going to make it there.

I don't think I can get to Landstar fast enough. Approved to go, just waiting until I get my ducks in a row before making the transition.

Talked to several Landstar BCO's and everyone I talked to is doing well and they love what they do. Every one of them said "If you work the system you will do well." I've operated as an owner/op booking my own freight before, although I was leased to a carrier solely for their authority - which is basically what Landstar is.

In my opinion, if you aren't successful at Landstar it's because you aren't managing your time or the loads you haul properly. It isn't easy but it takes determination and being smart about what you do (sometimes it means you do what nobody else will!).

I worked for Landstar couple years ago. When the freight is high the rates were good. When the freight was low it was bad. They kinda tell everyone the load are on their load board just pick your own load. They used tell use only about 30% of the loads actually are posted to the load board. So that can make it difficult. I knew o e agent he was a 2-3 million dollar a year agent at Landstar. We never would post his loads. Because he had drivers who would call him and get a load. He also has drives that would go home and call him and say. Put me on the list for a load on Monday or whatever they needed. I'm just saying it's not as easy as everyone thinks.

No I get that. I know cultivating relationships with agents is also a key thing to do and that takes time. I certainly don’t expect to hit the ground running and make 5k a week take home but I know I can do a lot better than what I’m doing now.

I get call all the time from agents " hay I see your going to be empty in xyz tomorrow. If you want I have a load going someplace that pays $$." I get calls like that 3-8 times a week...

I have worked in the Schneider system in 2007. Their system sucks. Your are constantly competing with company trucks with the freight. One month you will see good loads and then the next month they are gone. I had a cousin who was a lease operator in their system the last couple of years and his revenue was wildly inconsistent. One month he might bring home $8-$10k, the next month he is lucky to bring home $5k. The Schneider system is a joke in my opinion.
