Some people (or fleets) change certain parts at a certain mileage. The part still works, but can malfunction at any time. I’ve personally changed many parts that were still working like my belt tensioner, air bags, air compressor, shocks, etc. I changed them to have less problems on the road.

That's why. -
I change lots of things before they go bad, I overhauled my trans this summer it only had 300k on it. If they need my alternator there is a new one in the headache rack ready to go.
The point is in 45 plus years I have never had a shop steal anything, I have found a few tools that they left in my truck.
I think the op is paranoid and will never trust a shop or other business.
some people need to get a life and quit worrying, sweating the small stuff ain’t worth it. Best to not believe all the stories fro the TA counter of knowledge either.Opendeckin, Tug Toy, spyder7723 and 2 others Thank this. -
That's not paranoia. That was my personal experience and the experience of people that I know.
That's like you had your car stolen, so now you are careful and I think you are just paranoid and silly. Leave it unlocked and leave the keys in it, nobody is gonna bother it...
I think if I acted that way toward you, some might consider that callous and even rude.
I'm glad you haven't had anything taken that you are aware of. That you are aware of...
If you ever have new batteries and a new alternator stolen and you are out $700 or $800, I am sure that you will feel that was a positive experience and you certainly won't ever be more careful or watchful.
Some can buy a $10,000 truck and run it for years with little problem.
Others spend $150,000 and have nothing but trouble.
Be careful what the futue brings, because luck can change in a heartbeat, and sometimes karma can make you see things in a way that you previously could not comprehend... -
I guess I’m to easy going to worry, my shop has a key to my truck and I have a key to his gate.
my fear is not shops, it truck drivers that hit my truck and run.Tug Toy, spyder7723 and Rideandrepair Thank this. -

Hulld Thanks this. -
If my mechanic steals something off my truck I got a real problem.
Because it’s ME in my own shop.
If I’m on the road and need a quick repair I’m usually more worried about the quality and price of work than anything else. I’m more worried about them botching the job. Even the simplest of things. That’s what cost real money.
If I’m on the road and it’s serious, it gets towed home to my own shop to fix it myself.
My truck has not been in the alignment shop since I’ve owned it in 400k miles. Starting at 700k. I’m at almost 350k in my drives now and got 187k on my last steers. I have replaced a few components but used a tape measure to make sure it’s all back to square. At a dreaded low 80lbs air pressure over there whole life’s.

I was going to do the alignment myself but the Back Bay of my garage is not level. I was a little nervous because this is the first time running the truck since I bought it and put the engine in. And everything on the back end is brand-new.
I figured if I went somewhere and got it aligned at least if it wasn't exactly perfect it would be close.
And of course they wasted a whole day and tried to rip me off to boot.
None of my vehicles ever go anywhere for anybody to do anything. NEVER. The one time I do, they want to rip me off
Next time I will pay my buddy up the street to use his garage.
I agree with you 100%. My truck will never go anywhere for anything ever again.Brettj3876 Thanks this.
