    hey guys,
I just installed brand new 1409 into a 88 international with a old Cummins. I also installed new shift tower, set all adjustment to spec, also running a 15.5 inch Eaton clutch brand new.
I cannot get it to go in gear. I can get it to go in R 2, 4 so all forward stick pushing gears. when truck running I cant put in any gear. what is going on?
only thing I'm not sure about is the little square plate which moves onto of the gears, where the shift lever rod goes in . I have it set top position and in middle. i insert the lever in middle and tower case sits in as it should. but cant shift.

That transmission falls outside my realm of expertise. Sounds to me though that the clutch isn't disengaging, so all the guts in the transmission are constantly being driven. Is that clutch a "pull" style (release fork pulls the release bearing) or an automotive "push" style clutch? If its pull style, did you get the release fork on the correct side of the bearing before you bolted it all up?

    baha Thanks this.

thanks for reply. it is a pull type . yes on correct side. so even with engine off I can get in most gears, indicating clutch has nothing to do with it. if I understand correctly. even without pressing clutch engine off you should be able shift through all gears. I tried this on 3 brand new trucks in the shop. when engine running then clutch comes in play because it needs to push on disc to be able to shift.
I still believe it is a shift tower issue. like the square part where the shift lever goes , called interlock plate. in service manual does not indicate the position to place it . should be in middle , left of right during install?

Not neccessarily. All depends on which gear teeth are aligned as to whether or not they'll go into mesh with the engine off.
