Brake chambers..

Just last year, I sent a Trusse trailer to a shop to be repaired. Had an air leak.

As this was not our trailer, we send them away to be fixed instead of us working on them. Also because we’re not the only company pulling them as well.

I was with the mechanic in the shop, he was under the trailer taking the brake chamber off to replace it.

He didn’t cage it or ask me to put air in to release the brakes on the trailer.

He lays away, on the creeper, with his arm stretched out holding the impact, he shoots the bolt out.

The chamber shot off with a lot of force, smacked a suspension cross member and spun on the floor.

Years ago, I was told of a story about one of our guys that worked on the trucks in our shop.

He was working on the brake chamber, the old style with the clamp holding the spring in place.

He removes that, the spring shoots out and bounced off every wall in the shop.

I was told his underwear was stinking after that....

 

They can definately punish the stupid. But changing things to protect the stupid is why my coffee is cold by the time I get to the boat ramp.

 

Even back then I would cage the brake chamber drink a cup of coffee and then I would pull it off.

 

Could you take a picture of one? Obviously you have one on your truck.

 

Haven't had to put one on my current truck since I got it, but when/if i do it will have the same serviceable bolt clamp style i stuck on a customer's truck a few weeks back.

 

First shop I worked in they showed everyone the hole behind the vise in the cinder block wall...then started to explain spring brakes.

 

I sure hope this advertisement is wrong...

This is the proper one to get. A permanently crimped spring cover, no clamp.

 

There's nothing wrong with having a serviceable clamp on the spring side.
But if you don't know what you're doing you shouldn't mess with either side.
I've taken them completely apart back when they all had serviceable clamps.
But it was in a press when I did it.

It’s collecting dust in storage.

 

Had no luck with coins. Thats why I used a piece of bicycle innertube. After it was in there with fitting tightened down, it turned into a rubber plug. I left air on as it was still releasing pressure on brake so I could back it off. Then released air and did the innertube thing. That way no air leak and no brake drag. What denomination coin did ou use?
