When do you get good miles regularly

The majority of truck freight is related to manufacturing including raw materials, sub-assemblies and finished products. manufacturing was in steady decline last year which resulted in serious fourth quarter manufacturing job losses. The economy went flat and a record breaking 800 plus trucking companies went out of business due to a lack of freight coupled with predatory insurance companies rate increases.

If you were able to maintain similar total miles in 2018 and 2019 you actually did well. Talk to your DL about getting on a dedicated account. Also ask your DL to look for niche lane freight where there is steady freight out and back. For example, for several years before I retired I would haul John Deere tractor parts from Laredo,TX to Augusta, GA and Freightliner parts from the Charlotte, NC back to Laredo.

Edit: Also if your home terminal is Jonestown talk to the planner Jill Arnold about your situation. She's good people and a straight shooter. Hopefully for you she's still there.

 

I have been with Swift over 9 years and the past couple years have been pretty good for me.
There have been years with far less miles, especially this time of year.
Some weeks may be low on miles because of delivery timing, but the average is no less in the long run.

What areas are you running? Because some areas are more prone to less miles.
And your DM can have a great influence with the planners, if they decide to do so.

My current load is going to WA near Tacoma. Not a great area for loads right now.
I've been stacked with a low mile load along with a high mile load down to TX, all because my DM got with the planner.
I had said nothing, and I never do. I don't complain, but just take things as they come.
She called me just after the pplans came in to explain things, because she takes care of me.

All of my DM's have always taken care of me and watched out for me. And I have been with several terminals over this 9 years. (Granted, not the worst of them. Not sure of yours.)

And I have done nothing special to gain that help. I certainly don't run hard. Quite the opposite, as many that know me can attest to.
I shut it down at the first sign of snow or heavy wind. And I like at least 12 hours between shutting down and driving - more often 14. And my idle time is usually very high.

My point in all this is, it may be a combination of things that keep you from getting more consistent miles.

 

2018 was an anomaly … shippers were throwing money at trucks.

2019 was closer to normal. Except toward the end of the year. freight levels were steady but there was an over capacity of trucks.

Freight levels have started to slip in the last month and there is still an over capacity of trucks.

Basically available freight, is going to impact your ability to run. Doesn't matter where you work.

It does not get any better with Swift or the rest of the big uglies. Get your training in then get onto a good company. Get on to any where else but get out of there.
