Been a while back. Was stopped in Texas for a roadside. The officer informed me that the reason for the stop and inspection was because the state name on the license plate was blocked from view by the license plate light. She was also very unhappy that I would not let her “search” the truck.

I was living in Tx when the started enforcing that crap. Cops were pulling cars over non stop. The standard car dealer license frame at the time covered up the "Texas" on the plate and the fine was $200. Lot of revenue there. Those frame were few and far between fro a long time.WesternPlains, Dave_in_AZ and InTooDeep Thank this.

That is a common misconception. They can do an “inspection” of the interior, and that should take all of 3 minutes. They can look to see if you have proper sleeper facilities, seatbelt and seat in working order plus a general serviceable cab. That’s all. They can not open any closed areas. That’s cabinets, coolers, backpacks or duffle bags and closed garbage bags.
To do any more than that, they must have valid reasonable cause. Just stopping for a roadside or traffic violation does not meet that requirement.
Now, if they see a half bottle of whiskey sitting on the floor, it’s open season. That probable cause.
If they are adamant about doing a full search, make them get a warrant. The reason is the warrant must state clearly what they are looking for. They have a limited time to deliver and serve the warrant. They know this. They will try to hold you up.
some of the only things to say to ANY law enforcement;
What is the nature and purpose of this stop?
Am I being detained?
Am I under arrest?
What are the charges?
When they answer NO to the last few, your next words should be
Then I am free to go.
They have to say yes, otherwise you are under arrest or they are now unlawfully detaining you.
I know a number of people involved with various Law Enforcement agencies. They have told me several times over that last several years. Their number one job is to find a reason to put you in jail, then keep you tied up in the system. It’s all about the money that will generate.gentleroger, WesternPlains, dwells40 and 6 others Thank this.
