I have a 1998 Series 60 12.7L. According to this link http://www.pcmarinesurveys.com/Biodiesel Detroit.pdf, I shouldn't use more than B5 biodiesel. But when I'm doing runs to Oregon, there's only B20 biodiesel everywhere. Is there anywhere in Oregon to avoid B20 biodiesel, or is B20 acceptable for this engine?

I’m not sure about bus drivers, but truckers are subject to the weight-mile tax. Oregon does not have a fuel tax for truckers. They’re not part of IFTA.G13Tomcat Thanks this.

I have a DD15 engine, and Detroit is also saying mine should only use up to 5% biodiesel blend. It looks like this is only a warranty issue. I read somewhere that you should change your fuel filters 1/2 the regular interval if you’ll be using higher than B5.G13Tomcat Thanks this.

You will be fine ... except when the tax man comes a callin. Most of the time it is better to buy fuel out of Oregon than in and pay the ifta.
If you really wanna chooch up your ol detroit. Throw some marvel mystery oil in the tank. Has tons of sulfur in it ... like the good ol days. -
If your bus is registered over 26000 pounds you should be paying the weight mile tax but I suspect you’re not. And fuel in OR has to be bio diesel thanks to a bill passed a few years back.
-
I’m not sure that makes any difference. You will pay OR for the miles you drove based on your weight, and for IFTA, it’s based on gallons burned per state, depending on your mpg, which accounts for miles in OR, although OR doesn’t receive any money from IFTA. OR miles are only accounted for proper mpg calculation.

Now this is an interesting point, considering that now many states sell some biodiesel blend. I checked IFTA tax charts, and most states have the same tax rate for both diesel and biodiesel, but a few states either have a different tax rate or no tax rate for biodiesel. I’m guessing this is something that will have to be addressed by IFTA in the coming years, seeing how biodiesel is becoming more and more common.

Point wasnt that bio has a different tax rate ... Point was, I run Oregon weekly. Depending on where you fuel. The Oregon PUC price is higher than Washington, Idaho, Nevada, California less ifta.
krupa530 Thanks this. -
I'm not paying any tax because I have 0 passengers (coronavirus) and 0 miles. If I had miles I'd pay the tax but I'm not running any miles until I have passengers and figure out if I can run B20 in an old Series 60.
-
DD told me you can run B20 in a DD15 but NOT in a 1998 Series 60. That's the big problem. Weight-mile tax isn't the problem. B20 is.
Also can you use R100 "Renewable Biodiesel" in a Series 60? Detroit doesn't mention: https://dtnacontent-dtna.prd.freigh...troit Renewable Diesel Position Statement.pdf.Last edited: Mar 15, 2020
PE_T Thanks this. -
B5 diesel found at Flying J Oakland and Love's Roseburg. That should fix the problem.
