DO NOT EXPECT FROSTY, it wont happen.

Another reason to have a skilled AC man to evaluate it is that if it did develop a compromise leak to the outside air, it can gather moisture and crap into itself inside and choke on it.

You would with one can essentially be just squirting a little lube in her to hold her until you get the whole thing to the home shop.

 

If you are low on freon it leaked out somewhere and putting some in might get it to blow cold air but will leak out again.

When you go to Walmart to get yourself a freon usually truck needs around 4lbs of freon. If your lines are hot , first I would check if your AC compressor is working. You need to run your truck with AC on, open your hood and look at the compressor, it has a clutch in front and from time to time it's must spinning, if not then check if you have any freon in your system by open a steam valve on low pressure line which is one that much thicker line and get a screwdriver and just press on that to see if you have any freon, just keep your eyes off it. If it's empty then you have a leak somewhere. It could be AC condenser, compressor might leaking too or busted ac line , they might rubbing against something and start loosing freon slowly, look for wet spots. By the way , Walmart sells freon that comes premixed with oil so if you complete low on freon I would buy one with oil and rest just regular freon. But I would get home and take your truck to a good ac shop and let them check it out cause summer is around a corner.

 

Don't recharge it YET.

Start with why the engine is getting hot.

The condenser isn't going to move that heat to the point that the engine temps are going to get so high that it is going to overheat.

So overcharging the a/c will just cause more issues.


More likely you will need a flush done or even a new radiator.

 

One cheap fix to check. Make sure the fins of the radiator, and the a/c condenser aren’t blocked with debris. Usually a/c will blow cooler, even work good , while rolling, and get warmer while parked. Also will cause radiator to run hotter, especially when parked, due to blocked air flow. If radiator is original, it’s a good idea to take ata and condenser off, leaving lines hooked up, and clean radiator, ata, and condenser real good with water and air gun. Best from the back side real good.Meanwhile, You can spray the radiator from the back, then with fan on spray it real good from the front. Pulling water through everything. That’s a quick fix, might help a bit, but not as much as a real good cleaning. Probably low on Freon too, could have a bad high pressure switch, causing the compressor to run constantly. Adding Freon in that case, will overcharge and possibly damage the system. Throw a can, maybe 2 in it. If that doesn’t improve cooling in cab. Don’t bother adding more. You risk blowing something, from too high pressure.
