    Hi there,
My husband and I are trying to sign on with a company to eventually become team drivers. We're checking out schools in the Central Florida area, any recommendations?

Also, we're both curious about pay... one recruiter told my husband he would be making $35K-$55K his first year, as a single driver. But again, that was from a recruiter and I'd rather not hang on his every word.

I guess I just want some feedback from anyone who's done the team driving. And any recommendations on the best companies to work for when you're team driving, would be helpful. (Meanwhile, we're reading the forums on the good and bad trucking companies.)

We're getting a lot of negative feedback from friends with and without trucking experience. So I'd like to hear the details from the experienced guys.

    Thanks in advance!!

I would think, and this is my opinion, that your first year pay will be rather on the low end of what the used cars salesman is trying to tell you (oops, recruiter).

I have been driving a while, make about a grand or so a week. But I make a lot better per mile pay than a new driver will. I don't drive a ton of miles, it never works out to more than 2200-2500 miles a week. Fine with me though.

Now, on average, the 2200-2500 is probably about a good average to go with for most jobs. I know there are people on this site doing more than that consistently, and others do less.

But anyhow, lets say he starts at 28-30 cents a mile. That would be between low 600's and 750 a week. Multiply by 50 equals 31K to about 37.5K. Maybe some jobs pay better to start, maybe he will get them 3000 miles a week, but hey, I would not count on it.

Team driving.....I have, and it is nice to have your husband there with you all the time, but let me tell you, it can really suck to have no place to go at times. If one of you is a night person, the other one loves to get up at the crack of dawn, it will make it tons easier than if both of you go to bed at 9 now. One of you will have to drive at night.

The constant expectation that you can run around the clock wears me down. Even teams like to shower and eat and do, well other stuff, since you are married.

It is not easy to be cooped up in the truck for weeks on end. Sleeping with someone else behind the wheel was a huge challenge for me. It takes a lot of trust to put your life in someones hands.

The upside with be better money, you will be busier. But even less time to see anything. The nighttime person will never see a things.

That is all for now.....good luck.

First I would say, make sure you have a solid marriage and that you both can tolerate all those annoying little things about each other. Your going to be cooped up in a box day and night with no where to get away from each other.
I really am not sure about the best starter companies for teams, you will hear good and bad on here. Once you have at least a year experience as a team many other options for better company's will open up.
My husband and I have ran team off and on for 11 years, we did a few years with an O/O with Fed Ex Ground, pay was really good. Right now were running for a reefer company on a dedicated account doing very well.
With experience better opportunity will become available, just keep your records clean.

My wife and I were trying to find more information about team driving. We've been married 24 years, raised 4 children. I am (was) a land surveyor for the last 23 years and have been out of work for almost 10 months now with no light at the end of the tunnel. My wife and I both love to travel and figure we have a good twenty to twenty five years ahead of us to retire. The more we look into it, the more we love the idea of being on the open road and seeing the country. Does anyone know of a good place to start here in California, preferable San Diego? I have been seeing the England ads in the paper for driver training, but feel a little cautious about them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, yall! My husband and I have worked together in close quarters before and loved it. We're fortunate to compliment each other like we do.

Thanks so much for the advice and the tips. Anyway, still waiting to hear about pay rates for new team drivers. Or at least a bracket. ;)

Read post from texas-Nana (do search for posts). Her and her husband team for Swift. They went to school with Swift in Phoenix and they like what they are doing. I don't think Phoenix is all that far from you, is it?

Thanks for the response, bill. I'm in Florida, so Phoenix is a little far. But perhaps there are closer training facilities for Swift. Thanks for the tip!
