The first time I took it in Colorado is was a paper test. I missed one too many and the clerk reviewed the test with me and left the answer key right in my field of view. The second time I tested it was by a computer. Those are the easiest, if you don't know the question for sure skip it and come back to it. If you meet the minimum number correct the test will end

Just a note for next time, the DMV will know long before you get the letter

The reason I thought about getting my haz-mat is because a friend of mine that owns a trucking company told me they are changing the testing procedures in February of 2022

Apparently a person will have to take classes to be able to get it. He hauls hydrogen peroxide and was notified of the changes a few months ago.

####, my hazmat expires 11/2022. When I renew, will I have to take this stupid class?

Pretty sure it's just for newbies. Anyone wanting a CDL will have to attend school.

I don’t think so. The way he explained it to me was that “new” haz-mat candidates would have to do the extra training. So, you would be grand fathered in if you are just renewing it. That’s why I decided to do it now even though I never use it.

This is the first time I've had a hazmat endorsement, so I have never been through the renewal process.

The language of Hazmat renewal for Texas is vague: TxDPS - Hazardous Materials Endorsement

I was operating under the assumption I was going to have to go through the whole process (test and background) all over. This might include whatever new class is being proposed. Current rules don't mention the class, so I guess I'll have to check back in 2 years.

If I have to take a class, I will probably let it drop off since the endorsement isn't required for my current employer and my previous employer had me run so few hazmat loads that I probably never recouped the cost it took me to get the endorsement.

Yep. I’m with you. If I have to take a class to renew it I probably won’t either.

The friend of mine said that he recommended me getting it before then so I don’t have to do the extra training or classes later. So, I’m assuming that means we should be grandfathered in.

I’ll call him in the next few days to clarify and see if he has anymore info. I haven’t needed it in years so it’s not really a big deal either way to me. I just thought I’d get it while its easy in case I ever do need it.

Some states require HazMat process to begin in the DMV office. Take the computer test, then go do fingerprints, then wait for TSA approval, then return to DMV for picture & application.

Other states require you to do fingerprints, wait for TSA approval, then arrive at DMV with TSA letter, take test, take picture and fill applicaton.

I also recommend you find your state's online CDL manual. And read through the HazMat section. I always find new questions on the actual DMV test that were not in any of the online practice tests.
