Does everyone know how to grease a fifth wheel?
I talked to someone today, the subject of applying grease to a fifth wheel seemed rather elusive to this gentleman. Even the type of grease.
I buy a tube of red high temp grease. Most grease will work, I happen to like the red and tacky, or wheel bearing grease.
Pull off the plastic cap, and pop the metal tab out. Begin tapping the tube, metal end down toward fifth wheel, ensuring the grease makes contact with the fifth wheel. It’s an action of dropping/tapping the tube squarely on the surface of the fifth wheel. A quick pull up will suck grease out of the tube and deposit said grease on the fifth wheel. Repeat until the tube is empty.
Apply most of the grease on the lower 3/4 of the fifth wheel, when backing under your trailer, line up without touching the fifth wheel to the front of the trailer, drop your air bags, back slightly under the trailer, so the whole fifth wheel is under, then air up your bags. Get out and look to see that everything is of the appropriate height, and gently back under/connect with the king pin. If done correctly, you shouldn’t lose all your grease to the front of the trailer, thus avoiding a mess.
The other method is to buy a tub of wheel bearing grease at your fav auto parts store, apply the desired amount with a stick, such as a paint stirring stick. Back under the trailer as described above.
Might be a stupid question, but....
