That would hire a person? He almost had a CDL once. Failed state test. His cases are drugs (meth and a theft). He has changed his life around for the better.
If someone has pending felonies and is on probation, is there a trucking company

Depends on how old the convictions are.
What the terms of probation are
Drugs and Theft are not good.
If a CDL can be obtained, the last chance companies may hire depending on what he answers to the questions above.
The best thing to do is get the CDL first.
Look into state assistance for getting into an approved school. With CDL in hand, the odds improve slightly.Sirscrapntruckalot Thanks this. -
If one is on probation it hasn't been long enough to know one has changed. That said do you have any travel restrictions? That's common and if so it's very hard, but not impossible, for a driver with no experience to get a local job.
No matter what though it's an uphill battle, and most places that would hire you you would not want to work for. Maybe work the docks at a company like UPS (If they will hire with a theft felony) and in a few years transition to a driver position. -
Changed or not, and I hope for his sake he really has, that meth thing may be a killer. Might be better to wait until off probation.
G13Tomcat Thanks this. -
Now he's upset that no one wants to hire him because of his past. Feel bad for him being it's my brother.
He has travel restrictions. Drug court. All that. He wants to be a trucker because I've been doing it most of my life. -
He can probably get a local job until the travel restrictions are lifted.
Which city/town is he in or near?
~
If he were my brother, I'd tell him to get a cdl from a school, so he's prepared when there's a job offer. No benefit in looking for a job with no cdl, because some company will hire him and he needs to be ready.
Prepare for hair follicle drug test also. If need be, shave that head now and let fresh hair grow back.Last edited: Mar 25, 2020
Midwest Trucker and G13Tomcat Thank this. -
He made his choices, though, and now he has to deal with the consequences.
I'd perhaps push him into diesel mechanics.. those are always in need.. and he can at least be near the biz until his price is satisfied.
Once his restrictions are lifted and his record has shown no further contamination, he should be able to follow his dream.
His past and this profession don't mix well.. as you know.
Good luck to him !Midwest Trucker, x1Heavy and G13Tomcat Thank this. -
I might also add that pending cases involving drugs and moral turpitude like stealing are killers in this industry. It galls me to have to write things like this because I rather stay optimistic with my replies. I can't with this one. I do wish this "friend" good luck though! -
This industry is really paranoid towards those who have theft in history. Not going to hand a 180000 dollar tractor, 60000 dollar reefer and a million in narcotics pharmacy to just anyone.
The good news is that given enough time even felons build new futures in trucking from nothing. Even if they did unload trailers for cash money several times a day.
That meth and drugs will run him into a intolerant trucking industry at the federal level. If it has been reported to his records and capable of being found in the new Clearinghouse database (Which is a mirror of CDLIS) he will be excluded.
The probation and anything will jam him up. I don't know the exact law wording, but in this industry where you get to travel around the USA and so on you must not be a fugitive, pending anything in court, probation and so on. You need to be "Free as a bird" to travel.
Due to his situation Canada is verboten. That will reduce some of his employable. Canada Customs will absolutely pull him up at the bridge, know right away what history he has and refuse him entry. No ifs buts or maybes.
Its NOT ALL BAD. given enough time even the bad cases will do ok in this industry as long it does not involve theft, manslaughter with CMV or other high crimes that will absolutely see him banned for years or life depending on what the offense is.
The biggest thing ever here before anything is to get clear of the Probation, monitoring or anything at all. There is no point in trying to do anything for trucking until he is absolutely free as a bird. And even then that theft and meth would be a problem still.G13Tomcat Thanks this. -
