What do you guys do for health insurance? I own my own truck and I'm leased onto a carrier.

I checked out OOIDA, but in their benefits section, the show life, dental, accident, but no health insurance (even though several articles on the net say they have it) Did OOIDA stop offering health insurance?

    What about other trucker organizations?

I know it may be kind of hard to get right now. I'm looking for just high deductible, catastrophic type health insurance.

I tried the healthcare.gov portal during the last open period, but even for just me the cheapest coverage was like $500.00 a month. I don't spend $500.00 a year on Dr's, so I passed on that.

$500 a month is very cheap. Basically, 2.50 an hour, based on a 40 hr week. Don’t believe the estimates on healthcare. Gov, call them, they have all your income info on file already, estimate your annual income, find out the real numbers. Pick the cheapest bronze plan in your area. You might just be surprised. OOIDA is the last place to shop for any insurance. Might want to make sure you’re taking advantage of all available tax write offs. Might need a new accountant.Bottom line after deductions, depreciation shouldn’t be very high. You may be paying too much taxes also. Health insurance isn’t cheap, that’s why it’s such a problem. No one realizes till they get prices. Been too high for years. Everyone’s been hit hard, with sky rocketing costs for almost 20 yrs now. To answer you’re question, I have a silver BCBS plan, through the marketplace, Wife and I, together costs $440.a mo. I’ve paid as high as $1050, in the past for similar coverage, for 3 people, 16 yrs ago. It’s crazy, no easy way around it. In 24 yrs, I used my coverage once, last year. It covered a $60k hospital bill, that would have bankrupted Me, Especially since my wife’s been hospitalized 4 times in 4 yrs. Still paying my portions of a few bills. It boils down to a good % of my pay.But it’s a cost of doing Bussiness, whether a Company Driver or an O/O you pay, in one way or another.

I'm going to stay independent contractor, owner operator, so I'll have to get my own insurance, but thanks for the tip, even though it's not what I asked

OOIDA health insurance is only available for the first 30 or 90 days of your membership. Then after that time frame you have to wait for the annual open enrollment period.

If you lost coverage with in a certain amount of time, for whatever reason, you can still qualify before open enrollment. Call the #, talk to a real person, if they’re not any good, call again, get another live body to speak to. The system is underfunded, and undermanned. Still screwed up, as far as estimates on the website are concerned. The numbers were way different every time I did the online estimates. It’s not accurate.

We have our health insurance through healthcare.gov and I am better is the provider.
I pay $773 a month for me and my wife and our 11 year-old daughter.
After Obama screwed up the healthcare system, our rates went up along with our co-pay but our coverage was decreased.
    Thanks Obama

I am also an O/O and have BC/BS HSA for three of us. I put $7,500 a year in the account, have a $6,000 deductible for $225.00 a month.
Annual check ups are free. I would have to check, but I think it is a bronze package.
We went to our local insurance agent.

See, insurance companies LOVE folks like this. I'm an O/O, and dag nabit, I'll pay whatever it takes to stay one. I'm not ripping on their initiative, it's just you want support these legal crooks, be my guest. Insurance, in an ironic twist, is the kiss of death for most small businesses today. I was an O/O for almost 5 years. I went back to a company job, and spent my money on fun things. Lawyers today START at a million, hope you got coverage for that. It could haunt you for years
