Please explain this quotation to me, re. ELD

When you're driving as a trainee in a trainer truck, are you not logging experience? Is he saying that your ELD experience time doesn't accumulate until you solo? And that very last sentence, why is he using the term ELD as if it is a person? Does ELD have another meaning besides "electronic logging device?" Or does he just mean, "drivers are greatly disadvantaged"?

As an aside, can a company be vindictive and screw you over on your logbook, i.e., make the time you drove for them disappear? This is assuming you did not screw them over by abandoning your truck somewhere, etc.

Here's the quotation in question:
"ELDs start over again with driver training when they join with a new company. Again orientation, and 3-6 weeks OTR driver training, and then a solo out test before they can roll solo again. ELD flat pay in this period is a third of what a normal driver makes on CPM. Only drivers with more than one year OTR can road test and roll when they start somewhere new. I'm not quibbling, but ELDs are greatly disadvantaged when they switch companies within the first year."
