I've seen many trucks with chains on that ended up in the ditch, or worst.

I see drivers doing 35-40 mph with chains and the highway becomes a chain graveyard. They throw them all over the place. IMHO, 30 MPH IS MAX WHILE DRIVING WITH CHAINS. Make sure they are tight when you put them on and retighten them after a couple miles. Then keep your window down a bit and listen to the rattle.. it changes if they become loose. The bungi cords sre to keep extra tension on the chains..not required but I use them. Had to spend 125 miles on chains on one leg of a run in OR last winter and 75 on the return and difnt lose or brrak any driving this way.

What're "chains", anyway? I thought tires was supposed to be rubber, not chain?

Uh don't eat the yellow or brown snow. :biggrin_25522::biggrin_25522: The biggest don't I can think of is don't let dispatch drive your truck when it isn't safe to do so.

Anyone have issues with a particular type of chain? I know cable cahins are bunk, esp. the double sets, just curious about the survival rates of twisted link vs. welded-V & so on. Comin up on that time of year and I need to get a set for my truck, would rather not have to gte a set next season because I bought a type known to blow out regularly.
BTW, just talkin short haul, low speed in a OLD dump truck that I'm lookin to mount a blade on (can make some change clearing long driveways out here). If I can get the blade this season I'll be goin with a set of tripples, but still lookin at longevity.

I like the cable chains, but only for use as drags on the trailer axles. They are easier to put on, and a lot less weight to carry around.

Eons ago when I was a newbie, I asked an old timer what to do if the trailer starts to jack-knife. He said "You do what ever you do, and 9 times out of 10, it's the wrong thing!" So the best advice is to slow down and keep it straight, and don't do anything sudden or extreme, braking or steering.

Driving on snow and ice is so much better once you become calm with it. I drive on it every winter up here In Montana. I deliver food to two ski hills for Sysco. I've only had to chain up one time. And that was because I was stupid and put myself in a spot I couldn't get out off while delivering.
