I was informed that our OTR division is getting axed in a couple weeks. Now I'm on the job hunt. This has turned out to be a crappy time to be looking.
Anyone have suggestions on an open deck company hiring out of NC that stays out of NYC and as little CA as possible? Not concerned with every weekend home. I would like to continue running out West.

Dont be picky, I never cared at all what's in the trailer as long as I'm getting paid. You can worry about getting your ideal job after you've got some money coming in.

I see their trucks a lot. That's one of those companies that I'm just not "settled" or have peace about working for. Companies that advertise as heavy as they do make me a bit nervous.

Sheesh these days who don't advertise a lot? Lol my buddy says they have a large freight base, lots of customers. Maybe they need more drivers to cover the freight who knows but you get em how you get em

It's interesting to see you say that, because it leads me to recall my own experience prior to signing on with my present employer. I initially wanted to do specialized and work my way into heavy haul once I knew I was coming back OTR, so I came on TTR looking for companies, found two, and a third one showed up in my Facebook news feed I'd never heard of before. Before last year I'd never heard of the company I work for now, either--but after all the research and searching I did, I couldn't find hardly anything, which I took to be either really good or really bad. Well i applied to all of them, spoke with the recruiters, but like you said (and I applaud you for recognizing that), my present company, despite not paying the best cpm of the three nor offering a sign-on bonus, was the only one I actually felt a peace about. I learned that lesson last year and oh my God has it paid off.

All of which is to say, and I share this with people all the time...it ain't always about the best $. That's definitely a consideration, but for me, not the final determining factor. There's so many other factors involved but again, at the end of the day, I went with the one I felt a peace about, and it's rewarded me handsomely.

Know this: there's no price tag you can put on your peace. None.

Well, even after my hesitation with companies that advertise heavily I went back to ATS Specialized. It's been over 10 years since I worked for them, but I didn't have anything bad to say when I left.
As Buc said, you can't put a price tag on peace. After thinking about it, prayer and hashing it out with my wife we were both comfortable with the decision.
My reasoning for coming back here was:
    1. The first time around was fairly positive.
    2. They are debt free. In the current market, and looking at the global economy, being debt free is huge.
    3. Their benefits are good, not outstanding, but good. The cost is pretty good in comparison to the exchange in our area. They will also kick in before my daughter leaves for her freshman year at Ole Miss. One of the admissions requirements is she have medical and accident.
    4. They don't run a lot of building material or structural steel. That means very little time at places like Nucor and Gurdeau.
    5. They have a very large base of contract freight and they have their in house broker to pull loads from.
Inspite of the economic slow down my pay has averaged more here in two months than my average over 4 1/2 years with my previous company when breaking it down per week.
    Thanks for the input.
