I doesn't matter what most companies charge for anything, including installing an inverter. It only matters what your company charges. My company doesn't charger anything to install an inverter. But you will be fired if you have an inverter installed and the company didn't install it. An nverter is a big deal because it can easily burn a truck to the ground. They allow you to use small inverter that plug into the cig lighter without prior approval, but inverters wired to the batter must be company installed.

I don't recall hearing that trucking companies charge to install inverters. Back when I was OTR microwaves were just commonly available for trucks, actually Pilot had just started selling inverter/microwave combo in their stores. Peobably more important than any nominal fee the shop might charge to install the inverter is the schedule/time to get it installed. Hopefully they will install it the wekend you give it to them and it's ready to go when you are dispatched after the weekend, if not you're without AC power until they make it happen.

Microwave is the only item I've seen discussed in this thread that requires an inverter. You can run an electric cooler, TV/DVD, laptop, coffee maker or warmer, food heater, etc all on either 12 volts from the cig power outlet or with an inverter plugged into the 12 volt power outlet. I took all my groceries with me for the week and kept them cool in a 12 volt cooler and heated TV dinners in a 12 volt "oven". The one disadvantage of staying with 12 volts was the 45-90 minute cooking time versus a 1-10 minute cooking time with a microwave. The big advantage was the much less space a 12 volt oven occupies versus a microwave. The DC ovens are the size of a lunchbox or small toaster oven. The microwave is larger and requires a 1000 - 2000 watt inverter which costs about $100-200 from voltageconverters dot com.

What you carry with you in the truck is all personal preference. Many drivers have very little other than a satellite radio or CB and other like me carried the kitchen sink, or a useful analog for emergency showers. Don't feel you have to have all of these items or you can't go down the road. Don't feel you have to buy them before you get to the truck. I'd suggest you think about how you meet these needs at home and transfer your "normal" to the truck bit by bit. Some people would starve to death if the world's waitresses went on strike and others like me would hardly notice since I cook and see a restaurant meal or buying stuff in a convenience store as admitting defeat or wasting money. You have to be comfortable in your truck. I prefer to be equipped for almost anything rather than blame a customer for not having a company cafeteria or restaurant with truck parking nearby.

Good to know good to know.... BUT I'm a girl... and i like to think ahead and plan as much as possible instead of just jumping to it... and then regretting the fact that I KNEW i was going to need this or that but i just didnt plan for it lol, I plan on going on the road on a team with my friend (he is a guy) and not to say anything about man... but at least this one... doesnt think ahead and is just psyched up to go lol so I on the other hand am doing as much reasearch as possible on what i do and dont need to we can split the cost of things between us... hopefully i dont forget all the things I need... i keep writting list... scratching things out and rewritting the dang thing lol >.> you see i have a nasty habit of over packing... and i have the feeling that if i took everything i "want or think i might need" it aint going to fit in the truck lol >.< plus thinking of as many was as possible to save $$... and yeah eating out all the time... is a BIG waste of money... i know i wont be able to cook like i normaly do at home... wish i could though.... I would share some of my spanish food with you guys if we happened to be around the same place lol ^.^ i make a mean arroz con pollo and a lot of other food ^.^ GOD i'm going to miss cooking real food >.< *cry* lol but its ok ill get over it ^.^
