Is it easy to file IFTA by yourself?
We have a Kentucky permit but never did any miles in that state. We are in Illinois and mostly drove to midwest states.
How do I file and pay online?

Is there a fee just for the service on site?
How do I file the rest? Using the DOT website?
I thought you file all states together.

    Thank you!

What state do you have the IFTA license?
Your state has a website you can file online. No fees.

    Blackhorse77 and PE_T Thank this.

    Illinois.
    How does it work?

We drove only in Indiana,Illinois, Wisconsin, and Ohio.
We got Kentucky permit and Illinois (intrastate). Though I believe we didn’t use the intrastate one, since we operated interstate.
Do I file for each state separately? Or only in Illinois and Kentucky?
Our MC number became active one month and a half ago. That is why I still have stupid questions—still feeling green.

Frankly the easiest and fastest way to get set up is to pay someone like OOIDA. This is just to get your accounts opened correctly and ready to be used. Any annual renewals (if any) are very simple and self-explanatory once your accounts are set up. That’s how I started, but expect to pay a few hundred dollars. It’s well worth it in my opinion, especially if you know little about trucking in general.

Filing every quarter for IFTA or the other accounts (OR, NM, KY, and NY) is fairly easy. IFTA is more time-consuming because it involves all of the miles and gallons purchased for the 48 states. The KY and OR accounts are the easiest and fastest to report, followed by NM, NY, and IFTA, in that order. If you rarely go to OR, you can just buy a trip at a time. I think they’ll let you use up to 15 trips in one calendar year.

Initially, there’s quite a bit of learning, and you may have to ask lots of questions, do lots of reading, and call the account departments for clarification, but in the end it gets easier.

You must always file for every account (IFTA, KY, etc.) even if you did not drive any miles. All you’ll be reporting is zero miles, so the filing is a breeze.

By the way, I’m going to guess that your KY permit is not an intrastate permit, but instead a weight-distance permit. IFTA is a fuel tax, while OR, NM, KY, and NY are considered a weight-distance tax. An intrastate authority in a particular state allows you to pick up and deliver in that very state. An inter-state authority will not allow you to pick up in TX and deliver in TX. However, not all states require an intrastate authority.

    Thank you.

I know how to count miles in each state and gallons in each state.
Is it easy to file IFTA with that info? We operated only 10 days in first quarter. The logistics of it are super simple. How do you file IFTA?
