I'm looking to go back otr have been out of the industry for a year and in that time my med card expired and I claimed exempted Intrastate only. I'm in Michigan it shows an actual restriction on my CDL license. I'm looking to take my physical for my med card but secretary of state is closed in my state due to the Corona virus? How do I go about registering my med card with the state?

Ive read of the temporary fmcsa exemption with expired CDL licenses but I'm unclear as to how or even if that applies to med cards in my particular situation?

I'm hoping it's just as simple as attaining a med card and carrying it with me like the old days without having to register it with the state until the sos reopens and/or the fmcsa waiver expires?

Is your entire DPS/DMV closed too?

A DOT trooper might be able to get some info about self-certifying right now.

This is the best I could find from SoS's website. Basically it looks like you may mot be able to remove the restriction until the offices open. You might get lucky and no one care right now, you might not.

How can I renew my commercial driver’s license (CDL) during temporary office closures?
During the temporary closure, CDL renewals will be exclusively limited to those who transport goods and services necessary for sustaining life during the coronavirus outbreak. If you or your employer believes your work falls into this category, we ask that you contact your industry's professional association and ask them to contact us with your needs and any other such needs from your sector. Our department will review and process only emergency transactions from these professional industry associations that clearly articulate their employee(s) need for our credential to work in a critical infrastructure sector to sustain life during the Stay Home order.Additionally, we have also notified Michigan State Police of our limited operations and asked that they inform local law enforcement statewide and exercise discretion when interaction with someone with an expired credential. Our department has also waived late fees during this time.

Now that said, to add your med card to your license you can go to CDL Self and Medical Certification - login and add it. It may or may not help getting a job, or even getting pulled over. One would hope with the med card and all the closures the officer will be ok with just that, but I don't know if I would count on it unless there is a really good job on the line...

The problem isn't the self certifying. It's the license restriction. Hopefully the restriction would be ignored with a valid medical card, but the officer, or even the job doesn't have to.

I went to sos website and found that before I posted here and did not like what I read...I hope that's not how it is!

I'm not to keen about getting out to California and having to just "trust" caldot to understand if you know what I mean lol

Edit: Oops I didn't see the end of your post about being able to go online and self certify. That would have me feeling a little better but still...I'd be anxious as all could be passing every open coop...more so than normal lol

That's what I would do. In my state, and many others, you are supposed to fax/email your Medical Long Form to the state within a time period of the exam. The state will notify you within a time period they have received your Medical and reflected that status on your CDL record. I would fax/email your Long Form to your state, carry the paperwork with you, and exercise your license & endorsements as if you had been notified AOK by the state. You did everything you could do, the rest of the country is on vacation.

Many have faxed, emailed their state and nothing got accomplished.

Anything short of personal delivery is a risk.

The problem is that he self certified himself as "Excepted Intrastate" instead of "Excepted Interstate". That resulted in a new CDL being issued with a "K" restriction (Intrastate Only) listed on the back. If he goes out of state his CDL gets checked it will have that restriction on it and a LEO may not accept his explanation for why is was put on there or that it should no loner apply. I did the same thing and have the "K" on my cdl too, though I have no plans to go back out there right now.

Michigan's actually works fairly well. I know, I'm surprised as well.
It's simply a web form. Scan the long form to pdf, attach said pdf to form and click submit. You can even verify it "took" at the same site. Takes less than 5 minutes every time I've done it.
