Afternoon all.
Been looking around here since I started my CDL A class 2 weeks ago.
Currently going to Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby, IL.
I was laid off after 22 years in the printing industry.
After spending many months, sending off resumes, going on interviews, and going to job fairs, and still having no luck, I decided to change my career. My dad drove for over 40 years, and I've spent time on the truck going west over summer vacations with him in high school.
So my wife read an article in the local paper about the WIA program (Workforce Investment Act). The government pays for me to go back to school, so I can get back to work, and off of unemployment.
I looked into a few local schools, and decided to go the community college route.
We are 2 weeks into it.
Got my permits and endorsements, (Dbls./Trpls., Tankers, and HAZMAT).
We just started our behind the wheel portion of it. 1 day in the yard practicing our skills that the state of Illinois wants us to know. Straightline backup, forward stop with our bumper in a certain area, 45 degree backing into a dock, and a hard right turn. And then we do 1 day on the road driving.
And then we alternate until we go to take our driving tests. And I hope to hell Im going to be ready.
Ive already applied to a few places online. Roehl, Decker, and a few others. So we will see who calls back and who doesnt.
So here is hopeing the next 2 weeks go good, and that I have made the right choice in the long run to go into trucking to be able to provide for me family, and pay my bills!
Wish me luck, and I'll be looking, reading, and posting in the other forums.
Scott
Soon to graduate.... hopefully!

Sadonovan when did you apply for WIA ?
And how long did it take to get ?
I was told twice that funds were not available , I live in Chicago. -
Hello J60608
The WIA Program usually takes approx. 4-8 weeks to get qualified, once you are accepted.
WIA funding does have it's limits. You could probably find the funding in a neighboring region. I know that in SC we get renewed funding every July. Ask your case worker when they get their annual funding for this program.
Unemployment is so rampant, that your city might have maxed out already???
There is another program that you might qualify for:
The Displaced Worker Trade Act
If you were laid off or your company closed, then you could bring proof, letter from the company, to the Employment Security Commission (ESC) to qualify for that program. The position that you held prior would have to be considered non marketable in today's job market. (ie. Assembly line...)
If they can place you with a similar position, they will.
Best of luck to you! -
Yeah I was told by the unemployment office that it took awhile to receive the grant through WIA , just wondering if it really does take 2 months or more.Right now I'am on the last of my unemployment -Extended Benefits Program (EB).I'll call them again and find out.
I would have most likely had my CDL through WIA if I had known that program existed when I first gotten on unemployment. The unemployment office definately kept that information from me , I told them I was interested in obtaining a CDL.
Thanks for the info , I will just take whatever job I can get and go for my Class B license. -
Good luck and best wishes. You found the perfect site to ask questions and get good answers.
