More like are ‘up for a challenge’, that is a for sure way to keep your mind focused on the task at hand.
I remember learning loading freight with forklifts that had manual transmissions.

This idea has been the subject of many debates I have been part of over the years. I have seen both sides argued with passion. I think for myself if I am training a rookie I rather they NOT have any experience driving a small stick shift vehicle. Learning to depend on a synchronized transmission is a very difficult habit to break. In my humble opinion, most rookie drivers today don't listen to their trucks. That's a debate for another time!

When I ran two sticks that was one thing I absolutely refused to do. For one thing, in a truck with armstrong steering that’s a good way to get your arm broken. Second, I was determined to master those without doing that just to prove a point.

MAck is right, you don't put anything inside those old non power steering wheels, you will lose something important when it proceeds to whip and break your bones.

I prefer manual, I'll die with one in my hand. I do tolerate a good automatic, but it must be tuned to the engine and must have a manual mode. No adaptive, No 3 in 5 satellite bs, no other decorative BS in it or on it. The auto we had was a 2001 Meritor Rockwell in a FFE Century with about a 515 detriot. And it did ok with one exception, we were a team truck never shut down. Manual on it needed to be off at least a hour every 10 days to dump it's software buffer, otherwise it bricks just like a BSOD windows computer and require a tow plus a two day rebuilding process by a bigger shop computer.

After the second tow ruining a JIT load, Dispatch was given explict orders to shut us down half a day every 6th or 7th when we ran out both of our hours for the week. And that ended any further problems.

I still like my manuals. There are some that I don't tolerate however. Particularly those badly spec's tall 10 speeds. There is no point in having them in a governed rig.

One point, if you're afraid to drive a truck because of that one little extra thing that will become instinct in a couple months, you shouldn't be driving a truck anyway.

I'm afraid too now driver. Everyone I pass by could be a lethal virus carrier.

I'd look for something where you only need to go from your bedroom to your kitchen, and that's on really rough days.

They're moving to autos so they can hire the mentally incompetent and completely lazy.

Imagine feeling accomplished for doing a task that in all reality isnt even necessary. Like shifting.

I think you mean could be as little as a 500 dollar tow bill. I dont know of any heavy wrecker that'll even show up for under 300, then it's 150 an hour, and that was about 10 years ago the last time dad had to get pulled out of ditch.
