I work for a pretty good size reefer company out of North Texas. We were crazy busy during the hoarding now it’s come to a standstill. Went back to the yard the other day and couldn’t find a parking spot. 80% of all the trucks the company owns or just sitting there. I got a load after sitting 32 hours up to the NE. And get this? They gave me a load coming back hauling brake cylinders. We only haul food!

Two trucker buddies I know work for Martin and Schaffer, both reefer, both have been sittin for days!!! Not good!

they’re saying at least another six weeks until things start opening back up. And I emphasize “start“ there’s no way the trucking industry is going to make it till then. Forget about layoffs, just the overhead of all those trucks sitting and all those payments.

The saddest part about this whole situation is when the economy finally does turn around there’s not gonna be enough trucking companies and trucks left to supply the demand. And what did the government do for the trucking industry? Absolutely nothing. They did give us an “atta Boy” a couple times on the 6 o’clock news.

Ask them to furlough you and go home, collect unemployment insurance with that $600 a week boost for a couple mos and come back when it picks back up again.

Companies don't throw away their trucks and drivers don't jump off bridges if there is no work for a week or a month. Why do so many people go from "what's going on" to "the world is ending" in a day?

I've never seen OTR companies do furloughs.
They just starve everybody until enough quit
That they don't have to pay unemployment.
Maybe this time it will change.
    I doubt it though.

No I’ve said openly many times that the one beautiful thing about the trucking industry is the moment the economy starts to think about turning around we have an endless amount of work. And it will turn around. That’s part of my point. If all these trucking company start folding up and having to get rid of trucks, there’s not gonna be enough of them when it does turn around.

If there's a shortage when things turn around. That just means higher paying loads for those that survived it.

That’s because they don’t want to lose their drivers. Whether they believe it or not, and most believe it, their drivers are still the biggest asset. It takes a lot of time and effort when the economy turns back around to recruit drivers. It’s a huge overhead cost too. So you’re right. Just stretch them out 23 1/2 hours between loads and get them about 1000 to 1200 miles per week
