    I can't find the answer through search;
    Is the balancer just bolted on to the front of the crank, or does it slide on the snout? The "for sale" ones I see all have 8 bolt holes that appear to bolt to the crank.
    2016 D13 575,000 miles, so it's due.
    I had heard from Volvo that wear is not an issue with them, but I am starting to get a vibration. Just had the steers balanced, that made it better.
    I had also heard that it's an internal balance.

    First it's called a Crank Shaft dampner, and yes Volvos are internal and thy are a serviceable item. Most shops will tell you thy never need replaced but thy aren't the ones who have to put up with the funky vibrations. Most trucks are fairly easy, just unbolt the old one and put the new one on. The Volvo is much more involved because it's internal.

    It has many names;). Sort of like aftercooler/intercooler, or turn signal/directional, or shifter/gear selector, or truck stop/travel center, or rest area/pickle park, etc., but we all know what we're referring to.
    I guess the main thing I wanted to know is if it's something external that I can change out myself, or something that the motor needs some disassembly for.

    Bruce Mallison(sp) from pitts power has always said they should be replaced..think he said around 4 to 500k? Never looked at a volvo engine. Think most bolt on to the front of the crank. Its less $ than replacing a crankshaft.

    I have replaced only 2 on D13. Customer request. No issues, they just wanted to replace with inframe. They said they saw no difference.

    They wear out, actually the rubber deteriorates and causes vibration issues.

    It should be looked at 500K and if they look ratty (the rubber), then replace it.

    Most mechanics are clueless.

    And it is a cheap fix to a problem that can cause issue for you down the road.

    well I beg to differ with your opinion seeing as there is no rubber on most heavy use highway engines they are all viscous fluid types with counterweight inside.
