I wanted to ask if there is any requirements buying a used truck from a new truck dealership. I was told in the state of Va that a dealership is responsible for the vehicle being DOT ready and inspected before actually selling ? I was wondering if the same requirements are in the state of Illinois ? I bought a used truck from a new truck dealership and have had some serious issues with it, such as main bearing spun in the first 48 hours of having truck and finding out that the front rear axle has been patched and welded on to stop a leak.
Dealership requirements

You would have look at Illinois law but probably not much protection. They are usual sold as is. I has a used 2012 Freightliner. Is still engine warranty for parts and labor. Detroit did so much work on that engine it was cazy. It was free but the downtime was to much.

Well making sure a bearing wont spin is not part of a dot inspection... also did u not look at truck ? U should be able to see a patch weld on axle if u crawl under it..not to mention if u opened them valve covers and take a look , im sure all the evidence was in there ... That reallly sucks and im sorry it happened but u really gotta do an inspection before u trust a dealership to sell u something good.

Almost none of the typical consumer protections that apply to motor vehicles in any state usually do not apply to anything used in a commercial capacity. Lemon laws, warranties, etc just do not apply.
You get to sign at least a dozen pieces of paper when you buy a class 8 truck, one of them in the fine print specifies all of that.
And by the way, the salesman who told you that is well, a salesman......brian991219 Thanks this. -
It's a business to business transaction. As such a lot of buying protections are not there.
The bearing spun? Even after getting it inspected and doing a dyno? Or did you simply see all the chrome and say "Oh shiney, take my money!" -
Most used truck dealers DOT inspections are pencil whipped and not worth the paper their written on.

I wonder where do you guys buy those trucks that they let you take valve covers off, dyno them, etc.

My first truck the one steer wheel almost fell off. Half the lug nuts backed off about 100 or so miles.
Later when I had wrench rebuild the hub, he pointed out the brake hardware was on upside down and backwards.
That came from Freightliner of Arizona for the Criminally Insane with a full DOT inspection sticker.Cat sdp Thanks this.
