That's partly because of the assisted suicide also known as precision scheduled railroading. Someday they'll wish they hadn't done it.

Meanwhile trucking can feast on the reopening while they starve themselves.

UP got rid of some because new ones pollute less, that was a few years ago.

    What is this:
Precision scheduled railroading you speak of.

Is it the same as just in time freight.
Just on a train instead of a truck.

    x1Heavy Thanks this.

And they maintain a steam program. 143 well container cars vs Archer Hill at schedules.

Well like cars and pickup trucks (and almost every motorized vehicle that has an exhaust or tailpipe) locomotives (here in the US anyway) have to comply with EPA “tiers” for emissions!

Mine sure does not. Its slowly filling that converter. Which transfer heat to the rolling gas chamber.

I am in the process of replacing it. It will be a while.

We live on a Canadian Pacific line, they run trains in groups on a single track both ways, sitting on sidings to let the opposite traffic pass, then running one after the last until they're all through, the yard at the Mississippi is 35 miles from here, and there is no bridge, they go up or down river from the there. Lots of ethanol and byproducts move on that line.

We are on the old Missouri Pacific Line between St Louis and Jenks North Little Rock. Its Uncle Pete's Line now. When our economy is going all out and no one is crying about being poor, two coal trains side by side upgrade on a rolling meet, 8 engine sets working to get them up and over, one slower than the other. Shakes everything in the old house and we were miles from there.

About once a year a drunk high centers on a road crossing and Texas Eagle slams into it at 80 mph. Then we do it all over again a year from now when another drunk high centers...
