I past days yes, you could stop your clock.
Well, I don't need to log anyway, but of course one should keep up with the standards. -

On the clock does not stop thing you are correct. The 14 hour clock does not stop.
But if I start my day, drive 4 hours. Get to shipper and I am there 3 hours, then have to finish my day.
Where sleeper comes in is that no, the 14 hours does not stop, but I am not going to log that 3 hours at the shipper on duty if I do not need to. I will log 15 min when I get to the shipper and flag it load. Then go to sleeper for 2.45 hours.
This did not stop my 14 hour clock, but it is not working time. So that is 2.5 hours I will have to drive on another day. Or even that day if I am getting low on hours.
Since the 2.45 hours in the sleeper does not count towards my 70.
Hopefully I did not loose anyone there. No, I cannot stop the clock like I use to before the regs changed. My 14 will not get broken. But I would much rather not have that 2.45 hours as work time if I do not have too. Sleeper time does not count towards my 70.
On flatbed I have to log it on duty not driving. I use all my 70 plus some every week on the road, and I am home weekends lol. That is 5 14 hour days. Every week.
At central in my 65 and then 62 mph truck, I needed to have every 15 min block I could get for driving every week. I would scrape a quarter hour up anywhere I could to have all the driving time I needed to hardly ever need a restart.
That part is easy now. All I scrape for now is to have the hours to get home Friday. To do that I sometimes do not watch speed limits in my 85 mph truck lol. Or I just have to do some fancy coloring in my nice little loose leaf log book.
A quick comment on chains.
They are to get you out of a bad spot to a spot you can safely sit. That is it.
