    Thats something we don't check much of anymore since the sealed units became common.

    If I remember right, you had about a finger tips worth from the rubber seal removed at the center hole down to the oil inside. If you were up to the first finger joint and no oil, you added more until you had it there. The oil itself was not highspeed thin, just liquid gear oil. Not much different than say motor oil. Others will be more particular. And some vehicles have a sticker that demand a particular type and viscosity.

    What I do check for is leaks. Which manifest itself on the wheel inside or outside. And excessive heat on mountains.

    75w-90 is what i use on the trailer.
