yes, I'm well aware that lugging a diesel is bad. I didn't say anything about lugging,...running at the power band is not considered lugging.
I NEVER lug my detroit. But lugging on that is under 1400. ....I run a 1400 -1600 rpm range 100% of the time when I split, then bring it into 1525 to match the torque and hp band.

On a 9 or 13% grade if you let a detroit go to 1300 you'll find yourself starting over in the blink of an eye! Keep it at 1400 and she'll pull all day.

I might have a opinion, might curl up on couch and expand.

1650-1850 i found was the sweet spot pulling a long grade. Engine seemed to work less around 1750-1775 compared to 1600. Seems to me staying out of the boost more will help the mpg a hair

    On what motor

  6. pulling hills Im not in the big hole, like Brett says below Cats like to be higher on the rpm to be smooth.
I would usually end up shifting say 4 to 5 times to get that 25mph grade and not be screaming hot on the pyro. After the change the grade would be 35mph or 40mph to be safe. It has the power to pull faster but the pyro would go throught the roof fast. its like a Horse It will Run till it kills itself.

Its been very nice to have the 16-17 range on the hills like cabbage and some of the others. But like you and most others im in no hurry to kill the horse for no reason.

I had a drop up in the windmills by the mojave scale.

it has at one point a nice grade that my GPS was saying 8% grade being 80k at the time i came to almost a dead stop. I still think it is a bit more than 8 but not a long area just enough to slow your roll. After the change to the truck i was able to make better progress .

ive been up it a few 100 times now. But it will work your truck , with slow speeds and high temps.

Youre exactly right on that. 7under is direct and the next 3 start whining progressively louder! They sure dont split as clean as an rtlo either.
