So I called MCT today to inquire into their student driver program. No dice. The recruiter sounded exhausted and flat out told me that their program has been suspended and that he has been receiving 15 or more phone calls a day from people like me looking for a company to get their start in. I called a smaller outfit out of Fargo and the recruiter told me he had only one truck open that he was hiring for, and he had well over 200 applications. He went on to say that he was turning down drivers with over 10 years of experience. Sweet Mother!

Well, back to the drawing board. Thank the Lord I have a steady job already and did not spend the money on truck driving school. I want to do this so bad I can taste it, but spending the money for a truck driving school even though I already have my CDL does not sound appealing. For those of you reading this that might be in similar shoes (hate your job, dream of the open road, blah, blah, blah) don't just go to truck driving school hoping for the best. At best right now, you will be $4000 poorer with no job prospects.

Okay, I'm done. No, personally I don't think this industry sucks. I think I hate myself more for wanting to do this so bad. I must have hit my head somewhere along the way. I guess I'll ride this out like everyone else and see what the economy looks like in 2010.

Yup. It's happening everywhere, but guess what? The driving schools are still churning new guys out, telling them they'll make 50k their first year.

It's pissing me off, i wish i was in a position to do something about it, lots of people are being taken for their money almost weekly, the fact is, even when the economy was good most driving school graduates never make it past 6 months in the real world.. but the government is still spending tax dollars on this crap.

It's sickening. I'm sorry about your luck, theres lots of people in your position, and i hope it works out for ya.

Scooter if you want to get a taste of driving, try talking to local farmers since beet and grain harvest is around the corner. You can go get a temp. class B and work your way up from there. Its not a class A but its a start and a taste if youd like it.

Usually, a student is required to obtain 3 pre hires prior to enrollment in a school, or to qualify for WIA funding.

There are some schools that seem to sneak around these procedures. I would imagine that it is private pay/or financed, not Govt. funding.

The Employment Security Commission (ESC), does not consider truck driving as a field with growth nor substantial income potential, at this time.
These offices are overflowing with experienced truck drivers that desperately seek employment.

The WIA Program is taking longer and longer to qualify an individual for CDL training. This way they weed out the weak.
If you stick it out and endure, as well as persist on the CDL training, then you can get it.
The case workers, however, will try to steer a participant into another field of training for the participants prosperity.

The objective of the case workers is to get a participant trained or retrained and back in the workforce. They have seen the CDL students come back, too many times, unemployed or worse with their careers ruined.

    Best to All!!!

There are areas where it is better, but experienced drivers are bailing on slow companies and O/Os are parking their trucks to get some of these jobs, it's ugly in search of jobs out there now, and we are heading towards cold weather with the housing bailout end in sight.

Crystal ball looks dark and cloudy right now.

25(2)+2 that is true, I spoke with a couple of drivers, one being an O/O, that they came off OTR to work local seasonal jobs since it was closer to home, better pay, and also cause their spouse had benefits as well. Which was the main benefit of coming off full time and working local.

There was an article posted here on The Truckers Report either yesterday or the day before that talked about freight rates and how they were still spiraling down with really no immediate end in sight. Even though fuel prices slipped down, it just seems like there is going to be huge doom and gloom in this industry in the near to immediate future. I know it is my pessimistic side ringing through this evening, but it is also my old economics class ringing through too. Demand or need for trucks still seems to be at an all time low, but the market is SATURATED with trucks, driving the price (freight prices) down even further. It all has to equal out sometime before things will necessarily improve. Just my humble opinion though. I really, really hope I am wrong.

Got a guy running with us now, they cut his mileage rate O/O almost in half, and he has health problems aggravated by OTR, he is now company live haul, basically a line haul operation using sleeper equipped tractors.
