Thanks to low oil I'm on the job hunt. What's a good outfit to start with? Preferably dump truck or flatbed. Willing to relocate to pretty much anywhere west of Ontario. Very little actual driving experience but I've had the license in pocket for many years and my driving record is clean.

@FerrissWheel runs flatbeds and trains for SWIFT. He might be able to tell you if they are looking for more skateboarders. :D

Try indeed. Mike Vail in Calgary and Pidherny's out of Rocky Mountain House/Red Deer are both good quality outfits (AFAIK, no personal experience). No idea what their hiring requirements are, but a plus for you would be your experience as a mechanic and the fact their busy seasons are starting... hopefully.

If you can't start driving right away, maybe you can come to an agreement to start in the shop and get experience driving when you can.

Pidherney's iron always seems to look well taken care of. Nothing wrong with Red Deer either.

I would be looking at road crews, pipelines and probably environmental clean-up and the like and stay away from most dump-only operators. You know what I'm talking about if you've been paying attention around Ft Mac.

We are always looking for more flatbedders, at least in the western fleets. Im training one hired out of the oil fields with only a month driving right now.

Our eastern fleets arent doing so hot. But our PHX fleet which covers basically anything west of TX is always going. and we have Laredo in TX.

We have already had several hires out of the oil field, that price war and now lack of demand was brutal.

But seeing as you are up there in canada. That won't do you much good.

Working for a while in a dealership or a large trailer leasing outfit like Ocean, Wizard, D&D, etc., might give you some insight into who runs good equipment and pays their bills. The con of trailer outfits is they sometimes tend to not want to spend money.

With your service truck experience you'd be a good fit with private fleets like I've already mentioned.
