Hello everyone,
I'm new to the forum. I've taken a year off from trucking to try my hand at a career in real estate.
Getting established was proving to be a challenge. Now with all this virus b.s. I'm having a really hard time.
So I went and got my CDL reinstated today. I've talked to a few local companies with ok home time, so I can still work on real estate deals part time. I think I may be a good fit for them, and them me.
That leads me to my questions.
One is a 1099 job semi dedicated, home weekends. I'd have to find my own insurance, and pay my portion, and the company portion of my taxes. I'd also have to learn an 18speed. I have not driven one. It seems as though it may be stable because it is hauling produce out of Florida. .47cpm for pay.
The other job is dry van position. Full benefits, w2. Home time could be every couple days or weekend depending on customers. .39 cpm base with bonuses about .42cpm. if I get hazmat and tank endorsements .45cpm.
What would you go for, and why? Should I keep looking, or with the year gap should I be happy anyone is talking to me?
I have dry van, and lift gate experience totaling 4 years class A and 1 year class B. Maybe I should look at LTL? I know food service has taken a hit under the current down turn.
Thanks for your opinions in advance!
Getting my feet wet, again.

Stay away from 1099larry2903, Lumper Humper, D.Tibbitt and 6 others Thank this. -
W2 ...full benefits
Lumper Humper, rachi, HoneyBadger67 and 3 others Thank this. -
W2. Partly because if the company isn't in the position to take on real employees I'd question their financial situation. And their commitment to you.
Plus the idea that you should plan for around 30%+/- to donate to the government but I don't know your situation. Still, self employed is tough in the best of times... this is not the best of times...tscottme, Deere hunter, Florida Man and 1 other person Thank this. -
The mileage pay sounds a bit low
You're not a rookie,, per se. Maybe keep looking a bit longer for better pay.Lumper Humper, bryan21384, Deere hunter and 1 other person Thank this. -
Yeah I was doing much better pay wise before, but that was OTR lift gate work...Deere hunter Thanks this.

Good points for consideration. Thanks.Deere hunter Thanks this.

1099 .47 per mile is more like .20 per mile after everything they want you to pay for.
Lumper Humper, Deere hunter and Florida Man Thank this. -
Your not gonna have any extra time for your
Real estate business with either one.
So forget about that.
You'll get home, whenever they can get you home.
1099 and produce, that's bottom of the barrel.
Take the w-2. If you have too.rachi, Deere hunter and Florida Man Thank this. -
The pay is less than what I was paid in 2001.
Going backwards. I am not surprised. Its almost not worth it to go out OTR at those rates. You would be spinning money.rachi and Deere hunter Thank this.
