So let's say I start my day and I'm on the clock for 30 minutes, And then I go off duty for 30 minutes and my clock resets back to 8 hours what happens to the other 7 and a 1/2 hours?

Nothing. It just means your next 30 minute break is due in 8 hours. You still have a 14 hour clock from the time you originally logged on duty.

The regs state a 30 minute break is required within 8 hours of the last break of 30 or more minutes.
Means you can start, for example, at 6:00, work until 6:30 and take a 30. Your next 30 minute break would be due at 15:00. -
The problem is it aint stopping.

so You have a 14 hour day total
11 hours of drive time
You can only work 8 hours consecutively before needing a 30 min break
You can take A 30 anytime you want but it only resets the 8 hours till you need another 30.
There are times where you’re just sitting off duty and get a 30 or longer in. But generally if you want to keep moving wait till youre at least 5 and a half in to take your 30 because the most you can get back out of your 14 is 8 at that point and you wouldn’t need another 30.
Now depending on your truck and how sensitive the elog is you can get away with moving through a parking lot getting unloaded without starting your clock at all. Do a very thorough post trip at night wake up do a pretrip off duty (if you’ve done a thorough post trip a thorough pretrip shouldn’t take long) Go on duty and show a pretrip when your ready to roll if you can instead of starting that clock and letting it tick
