A good accountant may be able to get your taxable income down to zero.

 

If you want to stay under 26k and do small truck trucking then the only tactic that makes sense to me is to keep the truck and trailer as light as possible. You don’t need a 40 ft trailer with dually tandem axles or even a DRW truck. SRW 1 ton is fine because realistically you ain’t putting more than 10,000 lbs on the deck anyway playing small-ball like that. If you want to go above 26k then just go straight to class A equipment IMO.

 

Probably even better idea/advice is to not even try this right now. IMO its a bad time to be taking on risk with financed equipment. No telling how ugly this downturn will get but almost certainly it will get worse before it gets better. Rates are in the garbage right now on top of it.

 

A lot of correct information on this thread. The OP is doing the right research and seems to have the right balance of entrepreneurship and risk assessment. I appreciate seeing all the sound information instead of assumptions of perceived reality.

 

Actually this is true but also not true. You can have a sleeper that doesn't meet DOT spec and still sleep in the truck. Hell you can sleep on the front seat if you choose to, There is no DOT requirement on how or where you sleep if you note that time as "off duty". Heck you can sleep in the bed of the truck, in a tent or on your trailer..

However for NONE of those can you select "sleeper" on the log book. You can only select "off-duty". To select sleeper on the log book it has to be a approved DOT sleeper.. It's how us hot shot guys sleep in the back of crew cab trucks and get our weekly or multiple monthly inspections and every DOT officer see's our make shift bed's, set up in the rear of the truck but we never get ticketed.

It's dumb but that's how the law works. Biggest take away is we can't do 8+2 splits...

My opinion on why there is a DOT regulated sleeper size is more about forcing companies who hire drivers from creating uncomfortable situation for the drivers and forcing them into that situation. However if you choose it for yourself then they are ok with it.

 

This is the best advice.. Never in a million years would I start up right now. (I've been shut down over a month now) Everyone I know is shut down except a few guys I still know who haul reefer.. There are NO LOADs for flatbed hotshot.. What is still out there is paying dog poop.. Like .50/mile...

 

Not true, I moved 5 loads last week. Since LTL companies are laying off I now have been e-mail loads that used to be sent via LTL companies. Some things need to remain open. Imagine sitting in the dark with no tv to watch while in quarantine. Somebody has to keep moved transformers when they go out. Last week I moved a pallet of water on a gooseneck trailer normally shipped in a van by LTL company. Maybe 25% unemployed which is nothing I have ever seen but everything is not shut down. Time to get back to work IMO

 

Yes but key words is they contacted you, which means you have establish connections. A new company not only has to deal with no contacts but also a large amount of brokers who wont work with them because they are new then add in the current low freight levels and it's suicide for new company to open right now.

There is nothing on the boards right now...for flatbed.. even full truck loads they are trying to push them for a $1-1.20/mile..
