I think you're partly correct. The mask seems to be mandatory, but the orders can be confusing, especially if they're read across several government websites. I didn't see anything removing the essential workers exemption on the main Canada COVID-19 page, but buried in a press release...

In addition, all travellers arriving in Canada will be required to wear a non-medical mask or face covering to proceed to their final destination where they will isolate or quarantine. They will be provided with a mask if they do not have one.

    • The Order applies to all people entering Canada, with few exceptions. Certain persons who cross the border regularly to ensure the continued flow of goods and essential services, or individuals who receive or provide other essential services to Canadians, are exempt from the requirements to quarantine themselves, as long as they do not have symptoms of COVID-19 upon entry in Canada.
    • Persons exempt from mandatory quarantine are still required to wear an appropriate mask or face covering upon entry into Canada and while in transit, and should otherwise respect the intent of the Order to minimize the spread of COVID-19 in Canada.

See my pics in above post. As well, the officer has no authority to quarantine at the port. No facilities exist to do so.

I've talked to a number of drivers who have been given conflicting information. To be honest it really p's me off. There's no excuse IMO for cbsa to not have a consistent message about something as significant as this.

It's not like they're so busy they don't have time to get everyone on the same page. :|

All I can share is what happened this past Saturday at Fort Erie on the traffic side when my daughter came back to Canada. All I know about commercial side in Fort Erie is that none of our OTR's have had any issues. I'm local atm so I have no firsthand experience. Now as far as traffic, they have a designated "quarantine officer" who checks and interviews everyone coming in regardless of citizenship. I use quotes because I don't know for certain that is the actual title. I just know it is one designated officer per shift who has to call into Ottawa before you are released to go. In my daughters case the officer actually called the house where my daughter is self isolating (my parents house 2 1/2hrs away cause they have an empty apartment built in) and talked to my parents to confirm completely segregated living quarters for isolation. My daughter was prepared and wore a mask the whole time so that part didn't come up. Just telling you all this cause it looks like they are taking it pretty seriously here on traffic side for sure.I'll ask some OTR's tomorrow and post back. Also know some officers from my former life as a customs broker with the Big Bad L
We had issues when this all began with snowbirds coming back thru Fort Erie and Niagara Falls, being told to go right home and isolate, then going to the LCBO or Walmart and openly telling people they had no intention of following the rules. It was common enough knowledge in the communities that I'm certain that got back to the ports. Sorry for the long-ish post

Kinda late on all this cause honestly I forgot till yesterday. Sorry bout that but thought I'd post what I just found out. I crossed back in at Fort Erie Wednesday and no one was wearing masks including me. But I was empty and didn't need to go in. One of the trainers had to physically go into commercial yesterday to sort out a dropped trailer and masks are mandatory inside. In Fort Erie at least. So have one handy just in case the broker F's up lol. Also they aren't mandating any particular type. Trainer had just a simple cloth mask, no N95 or anything.
