Need a decent GPS

GPS will NEVER replace common sense or EXPERIENCE!
Where do you people deserve to be spoon fed all this pre-planned BS and or time to do it ?

You fish need to get a grip,expect flak from those you LONG before you cut their own trails out here with less then a map,pencil and a note pad.

GPS is what it is,a tool and nothing more. The technology is still nowhere near "usable"on any confidence level.(BOTH $500 units currently on the market are FISH BAIT)

I have a 255w thats helpful at times,and a PITA the other 85%.

Dealing with Garmin is like dealing with WalMart Dis. Center. THEY COULD CARE LESS THEN LESS!!

As with any tool you have to be proficient with it to get the work done useing it.
A Tradesman is smarter then the tools he uses,same applies here.

I set my 255w to GO and roll,I zoom to the destination and "look". The GPS will route you on surface streets that dont need traveled. Instead of takeing the GPS as the gospel when other streets are clearly seen,shut it down and by-pass the exit and let the unit RECALCULATE!! then follow the "better" route "YOU FOUND" from there.

 

Dude, you just said yourself that most of these streets you only know to rule out by driving down them. I don't need a computer program to do that, my brain works just fine.

And you're obsessed with maps. There are no hyper accurate maps. They are all wrong somewhere. That doesn't matter anyway. It's not the maps, it's the routing. Google has their cars driving around taking pictures of every street they can, you know like the ones with "No trucks" signs on them. They could stuff the knowledge into a gps unit that could keep you off those streets.

 

Yeah, me too. I find that if mapquest can't find something, googlemaps can, and vice versa. Sat view on both. I've got the cell phone, directions from dispatch, the shipper/receiver, the atlas, the gps which works as a rolling atlas even when routing fails, two laptops, the cb, the locals at the gas station, old farmers, bears, etc., and my nose. I can find anything. Though I do drive a flat top skateboard so I don't have to be too careful about low clearances.

 

Actually, I could give a flying leap what you do. You can go jump in the lake for all I care. However, a lot of your assertions are asinine, based on pure conjecture, and shear utter ignorance. Thus, it is my job to set you straight.

Trust me you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out what you are doing. It’s not that complicated. Not only that but I can also tell that you are young and haven’t been around the block yet all that much, and speaking of being a genius, I didn’t throw $500 dollars down the drain like you did on useless technology and then demonstrate that you still haven’t learned your lesson by claiming you are anxious to jump on the upcoming Rand McNally. Not to mention that I never would have entered the discussion in this thread in the first place had I noticed the bottom of your first post, so I regret getting tangled up.

Oh, by the way, when you get a ticket for being on a restricted route or lose your career for hitting that low overhead, blame it on your so-called truck specific GPS device and see how far that will get you.

 

You left out the part where I also said you need to check any unfamiliar roads you never drove down before.

I wouldn’t call making sure the routes you travel on are legal for 18-wheelers an obsession. I would call it more like common sense. Some of you guys want to call yourself drivers, yet you refuse to do your job and are always looking for an excuse or an easy way out.

Yet you claim that building a "no frills" truck specific GPS device that does truck routing reliably "in this day and age, …is entirely possible." Yeah right...and it keeps costing you your hard earned money to find out otherwise. Even after being repeatedly burned.

I mean aren't you the guy that got duped into buying the PCM 430 and when you realized that it was junk, you hurried up and jumped on the 465T, and now that you realize that it is junk too, you can hardly wait for the Rand McNally to be released.

If I had a mailing list to sell to shysters that sell crap via spaming your email inbox, I would want a thousand people like you guys to be on it because I could charge a premium for it.

That’s what I have been trying to tell you guys and that is something you guys (really dupes) have learned the hard way, some of you twice already, and probably three times once the Rand McNally gets released. Some of you guys just find the truth and reality to be too distasteful and unpleasant to swallow when it contradicts with your reality.

Give me a break, the people at Google don’t know what a truck stop is much less a restricted route or a low clearance. Hell, Garmin doesn’t know anything about trucking either and that’s why their 465T sucks big time! Nevertheless, they do know how to milk truck drivers’ hard earned money from their steering wheel calloused fingers.

In any event, I wasn’t gullible enough to pluck $500 dollars down twice to learn the hard way what you should have known already like some of you guys did and are planning to do again as soon as the Rand McNally gets released.

 

Dude…get over yourself, for Christ sakes you are lowly truck driver and not a rocket scientist. Meanwhile, I had a career that I retired early from because the retirement package I was offered was too good to pass up. Had I slacked off in highschool and then flunked out of college, I would have become a truck driver too. Anyway, I only became a truck driver after I got bored as hell staring at Momma and the walls of my house, not to mention that every cent I make goes to the benefit of my children and my new grandchild, as I already have all the money I need.

Don’t humor yourself dude, even at my age I can still run circles around you and do more with one hand tied behind my back just to be fair.

That’s the hard way. If you were a rocket scientist instead of a truck driver, you would have already gotten the free 2009 New York City Truck Route Maps, and if you also used Streets & Trips to plan your routes, preconfigured it with avoid area rectangles so that the only way that it would route is down those legal truck routes. Oh well, you know best.

Thank God I don’t have a difficult job like you do, because lord knows I could never handle it since I don’t have an S stamped on my chest like you. Lord knows only the elite of the elite are qualified to become truck drivers.
